Why support LGBTQIA+ survivors?
While India has been free for 75 years, the freedom to be oneself only came in 2014 for the LGBTQIA+ community thanks to the historic NALSA Judgement of the Supreme Court. This means that the system for education, health, and safety around us was only made to cater for the binaries of gender. Today systems of support and healing are in the process of sensitisation and upgradation, but the process is slow.
An LGBT individual is 4 times more vulnerable to face gender-based violence than a non-LGBT individual and often there is a lack of access to culturally competent and trauma-informed support systems. This marginalization compounds the emotional and social impact of violence, leaving survivors feeling isolated and unheard.
Why Invest in ‘Hope in a Purple Crayon’ as a Solution:
This pilot of "Hope in a Purple Crayon" is a year-long action research program designed to bridge and support the well-being and social inclusion of LGBTQIA+ survivors of gender-based violence in the Indian context and systems at national and grassroots levels Here's how:
- Art for Creative Expression: It allows safe exploration of emotions, self-discovery and a sense of agency, which enhances emotional regulation skills and reduces symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress.
- Multiple Art Forms: Our weekly sessions incorporate visual arts drawing, music, dance, and theatre to create a supportive space for collective healing.
- Reclaiming Power: We address body image issues and gender dysphoria, and facilitate reclaiming of the ownership of one's body, by practising self-compassion and forgiveness, self-care practices for managing anxiety and fear in social spaces through art.
- Continuous Evaluation and Impact assessment: We compile the journey to strengthen the pedagogy and best practices for first respondents and caregivers of survivors.
- Cost Effective: A one-hour session with Queer Affirmative, trauma-informed therapist costs an average of 1500 INR. Through Hope in A Purple Crayon, we provide well-being support at one-fourth cost.
Your Support and Investment Impact:
- Each person receives 70 free sessions of support spread across 6 months
- You Enable 15 diverse survivors - across gender identities (non-binary, genderqueer, transmasculine, cis-gendered), sexual orientations (gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, pansexual, questioning), and disability statuses (neurodivergent physical disability) to access art-based well-being program.
- You Enable Queer Affirmative Pedagogy for care health workers - Hope in a Purple Crayon’s learnings, evaluation and journey will help in creating a module that will be accessible for care health workers who can support survivors of violence, including domestic violence, rape, intimate partner violence, child abuse, gender dysphoria and natal violence. You will indirectly benefit 5000 individuals through mental health professionals, caregivers, and LGBTQIA+ organizations.
