Almost every day now, we wake up in the comfort of our homes to the disturbing stories of the exodus of the Indian migrant worker. But what we probably don't realize at first is that our own homes were built by them. We used to meet them every day; they worked in the restaurants we ate in, kept the societies we lived in clean, drove the autos and buses that ferried us to work, and yet when we hear their plight we feel miserable but disconnected like it is a distant utopia. Maybe, We will never be able to understand their struggles. How can we? How can we possibly understand the struggle of a 15-year old who has to cycle his parents 1200 km to reach home or a mother who has to walk hundreds of km with her child in arms? But we can help make the Journey easier for some of them.

For a long time now, We have all wanted to be of a little more help in this fight against COVID than simply sitting at home in isolation and a lot of us must have already contributed towards some relief aids. The State and Central Governments are already trying to support migrant workers. But within weeks, the waiting list for Government facilitated transport has already run into lakhs. And so for my birthday this year, I have decided to start a fundraiser to contribute towards this cause. The money raised would go directly to the Lala Bhagwandas Trust that is running the Ghar Bhejo Campaign alongside Khaanachahie to help stranded migrant workers reach home safely.

What is Ghar Bhejo:
Lala Bhagwandas Trust and Khaanachahiye, in collaboration with Government authorities and inter-state private transporters, will arrange for buses to take migrants to their villages across the country through the Gharbhejo campaign. Team Gharbhejo, in partnership with local officials, procures all necessary permissions, including medical certifications, NOCs, etc. These documents will be provided to the authorities in both the Home State (Maharashtra) and the destination State.
Gharbhejo campaign by LB Trust , Neeti Goel, and KhaanaChahiye is officially supported by Sonu Sood.

How can you help:
I am trying to raise an amount that would cover the expense of two buses which would take upto 70 migrant workers to the doorsteps of their home and I believe with your help I just might. You can contribute towards the fund in whatever capacity you would like/can. The overall cost of the journey, including fuel charges, driver charges, tolls, and permits, comes to ~Rs. 75 per kilometer. Thus, a bus covering 1,000 km and ferrying 35 migrant workers costs Rs. 75,000, while the one covering 2000 km costs Rs. 1,50,000. This translates to little over Rs. 2 per km per passenger.
  • ₹60,000 - covers the approx. cost of one bus to travel 1000 km
  • ₹8,000 - helps a migrant family travel 1000 km
  • ₹3,000 - helps a migrant travel 1500 km
  • ₹1,500 - helps a migrant travel 750 km
  • ₹500 - helps a migrant travel 250 km
