Cancer? Does he really have cancer? I remember asking the doctors repeatedly. We worried about the tough road ahead . Does this mean chemotherapy for a 1-year-old? That's when the doctors gave us the second shock: his cancer would not respond to just chemotherapy. He needed a bone marrow transplant. I didn't know whether to be relieved that he wouldn't have to go through months of grueling chemo or sad that I wouldn't be able to afford the transplant.” - Rajeev Mittal

Born healthy, 1-year-old Laksh was diagnosed with Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) in December. It is a rare form of childhood cancer in which the body produces too many white blood cells from immature blood stem cells.

The parents took Laksh to the doctor because the little one was running a high temperature. His fever wasn’t subsiding. It all happened too fast. After the tests, they discovered it could be cancer. After meeting with a few doctors they began scrambling for funds to save their son.

"We started calling everyone we know, asking for them to transfer some money so he could have his transplant." - Rajeev

Rajeev works in a private company in Faridabad and is the sole breadwinner of the family. He somehow managed to arrange Rs. 4 lakhs to start with Laksh's treatment. Lucky for them, their elder daughter, Bhavika, turned out to be a match for her brother.

"There was no time to waste. The hospital had to do the transplant on an emergency as Laksh's condition got worse. He is still in danger. Post-transplant he is at risk of developing an infection or relapsing." - Poonam

“We have to keep him in the hospital for longer but we cannot afford it. We have to pay for the remaining amount for the transplant as well as continue with our son’s post-transplant care for a period of 2 months. This would cost us at least a lakh per month. We need your help to win this battle once and for all.” - Rajeev
