Support Survivors of Bonded Labour

Justice Ventures India Trust’s  (JVIT) vision is to see unjust communities transformed into communities where the human rights and dignity of the poor are respected. JVIT collaborates with local partners, delivering greater freedom, justice, and restoration to men, women, and children who are victims of terrible injustices such as human trafficking.
Our work till date We want to raise funds to support a particular community in Madhubani from the state of Bihar. This community of 38 families (around 186 people) was rescued from agricultural bonded labour in 2015 by a team of the Justice Ventures India Project, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and other local authorities. As they slowly rebuild their lives, your donations will support them in accessing education, healthcare, and other welfare needs such as sustainable livelihoods and legal support, etc. To deliver help to the community in time we will be receiving donations till the 4th of November.

They were denied basic human dignity as they were forced to work on the land for decades without receiving their due wages or enough food to sustain themselves. Entire families, including children, were made to work long hours with insufficient breaks. These families were entrapped and frequently verbally and physically assaulted.
After making release certificates available to the survivors in order to secure state benefits for them, JVIT worked with the local administration to provide land to the survivors. In 2019, a total of 1 acre and 14 decimals of land was allotted and divided equally among the 38 families. Acquiring a portion of land to call home was just the beginning of their healing journey. The community has been facing perpetual challenges in the areas of education, housing, and health etc.

Education- INR 7,20,000

We aim to establish a bridge school which will be in their vicinity for a period of 3 years. This school will support children in catching up and bring them up to par with the level of education one should be receiving according to their age.
Due to caste-based discrimination, the state-run school in a nearby area is reluctant to provide them with an education. The community fears that this will not only make their children inapt for the future but will also force them into bonded labor. The idea is not to replace the state-run schools but to facilitate a bridge in their learning. Meanwhile, JVIT will continue to advocate with the state government to ensure that children from this community can peacefully attend the state-run school.
Your contributions will be utilized in hiring teachers and other logistics for establishing this bridge school.

Health- INR 6,25,000

The community is also pressed with health-related issues. The access to healthcare systems has been a challenge due to multiple factors. Due to the COVID pandemic, such challenges have doubled. Children, women, the elderly, and men are all facing one ailment or another.
Your contributions will assist us in hosting a medical screening camp for the families, training, equipping, and empowering community members as medical volunteers, and delivering emergency care right away.

Other Welfare Needs - INR 8,10,257

The members of the community are still struggling to find a livelihood to support their families. To guarantee that they are employed in a specific skill-based trade, they require training and consultation. Also, there continues to exist a gap between them and their entitlements which the social workers are working steadfastly to bridge. They are also seeking support to fortify their position in the ongoing legal proceedings.
Your contributions will go a long way toward addressing these critical gaps.

Yes! Your support will ensure that the coming generations of the community have these and other needs provided for and that they live the life that they deserve.
