    This fundraiser will benefit

    Kruti Dholakia

    from Andheri, Maharashtra

It’s 5 pm and two individuals reach the street of Azad Lane of Andheri, prompting dozens of stray dogs and cats to come out in the hot Mumbai weather. They are wagging their tails and salivating with eager look in their eyes, for their daily food. They jump in excitement to get it first, because they don’t get much of it anyway. On weekends they get lucky to eat twice the quantity of food. The 5-person animal welfare group, which includes Dr. Kruti Dholakia, her assistant and a helper along with two volunteers was started by Dr. Kruti 2 years ago, when she started feeding a veteran dog regularly out of kindness and empathy. Now, there are more than 120. However, the strays need more than just meals. Animal Rights and You also tries to ensure fair treatment from humans towards the strays, vaccination, sterilization and in some cases highly specialized medical treatment which avoids the spread of any contagious diseases in the society through animals.
From Reflective Neck Collaring Drive to hiring animal behaviourist to resolve animal conflicts and installing cement water bowls for strays and birds, Animal Rights and You truly looks after their locality’s animals as their children.

Notably, since the group’s inception the cases of Dog bites and incidences of Dog suffering from Rabies have dramatically reduced in the area.

But everything is not as rosy for these animals. They live on the streets in unmonitored in unhygienic conditions interacting with various animals and environments which leads to tick infestation, ear mites and fleas. Ticks are very good at passing on infections and diseases, such as Lyme disease and babesiosis from one animal to another. Ear mites cause skin infection and tearing, squinting, painful eye. As the pet scratches, bacteria and yeast are rubbed into the skin and the pet develops secondary bacterial and yeast infections making ear discharge stinky and full of pus. Similarly with fleas, apart from itching and stinging, unchecked infestations of fleas can actually cause anemia and Haemobartonellosis from blood loss; this can sometimes be fatal, particularly in kittens which needs specialised medical treatment and blood transfusions to cure.

In the group’s history itself, ticks, fleas and mites have proved to be the cause of various serious medical cases such as of dog Pearl (Ear Hematoma on the brim of amputation), dog Gunda (severe skin infection), pup Champ (died by tick fever) and many more.  The infections and diseases were not only very painful for the children, but very expensive for the group too.

For the animal’s basic well being, controlling the rampant tick, flea and mite infestation is very important but given the increasing number of animals handled by the group, expensive too.

The group’s operations are almost completely managed and funded by Dr. Kruti, who is a full time Dentist and a part time Law professor. Their NGO registration gets continuously delayed because of bureaucracy and lack of funds which has led to low donations, recognition, credibility and lack of volunteers.

The donation amount includes :
1. 50 packets of anti tick solution for cats and kittens (250*150 = 12500)
2. 10 packets of Anti tick solution for puppies (175*10 =1750)
3. 60 packets of Anti tick solution for dogs (300*60 =18,000)
{Point 1,2 and 3 needs to be repeated thrice a year to complete Anti-Tick,mite and flea treatment}
4. 35 packets of Anti tick solution a year for strays beyond our feeding zone ( 35*300=10,500)
5. 2 strips of tablet Neomac 10mg needed every year, in case of
a) aggressive dogs
b) too many big ticks on body
c) too many bundles of mites in ears
d) unknown dog
(2*110=220)

6. Rs. 2,004  for a bottle of frontline spray
7. Two bottles of medicated shampoo (650*2 = 1300)

Hence, 1,07,470 (estimation provided) + 2,004 + 650 = 1,10,124

We are not including any administrative or miscellaneous costs as that's on our shoulders. We only wish to seek help to keep our stray children healthy and happy.
