Khoj Community School is located in the M-East ward of Mumbai which records a slum population of 77.55% and a Human Development Index of 0.05. M-East ward ranked lowest in Mumbai Human Development Report 2009. This apart, the 256+ slum settlements and 13 large resettlement colonies in this ward are reflective of the creation of a ghetto in a global city with the highest COVID 19 fatality rate.
Khoj Community School (Khoj) is Apni Shala’s initiative to create a space for high-quality education for children in Govandi/Mankhurd area. Khoj aims to become a model space for professional development and research set in the Indian context for integrated curriculum and pedagogy for whole-school SEL integration while continuing to serve children in Lallubhai Compound with high-quality, SEL-integrated education. In its third year of operation, Khoj is being designed on the following core principles: Concept-based Curriculum, Multicultural Education, and Community Development.
Due to financial burden, loss of income, etc parents are unable to bear the cost of the internet, electricity which in turn becomes a hindrance in a child’s education. We are trying to bridge this gap and ensure education and resources reach the students of KHOJ to ensure their learning is not compromised. We aim to create a Resource Center at Khoj which will cover the following details:
- Resource Centre will ease out the accessibility as the school is in the same community where the children reside thus the space of the resource center will be available by all the students.
- The primary focus of Khoj is to ensure that continued learning is provided to the students even in a virtual set up. The Resource Centre will have internet facilities with laptop/tab support. It will ensure that the devices are placed in different rooms and all the safety measures are being followed. In this way, the students will get an opportunity to attend their synchronize learning time.
- To ensure that the students are getting access to resources such as library books, worksheets stationery, and other necessary aid for learning. The Resource Centre will also provide access to these resources as per schedule on a weekly basis. Helper didi and Khoj staff will be present to ensure that the resources are distributed with safety precautions.
- The library will also consist of toys and play resources which would be given access to once a week. Play is also a great medium to learn and develop Social-Emotional Competencies in an individual.
Your support is needed to make this possible. We request you to donate, your small contribution will create possibilities for several students at Khoj.
