Story

We rely on the generosity of our kind hearted friends, family & people like you — your support can help us provide ONE KHOJ STUDENT with education and health support. so we can create a bright future and support the dreams of all of our children.

In our classrooms, we have 78 young crazy, amazing, and curious elementary learners who come from Govandi- one of the largest illegal settlements in Asia- which sits in the long shadow of 326 Acre Deonar dumping ground. Our school has kids between the ages of 6-10. They inspire us teachers, working independently in small groups, engaging in whole class discussions and having daily opportunities to actively listen, question, reflect, revise and share.

Khoj Community School is Apni Shala’s initiative to create a space for high-quality education for children in Govandi/Mankhurd area.

Khoj aims to become a model space for professional development and research set in Indian context for integrated curriculum and pedagogy for whole-school SEL integration. In its third year of operation, Khoj in being designed on following core principles: Concept-based Curriculum, Multicultural Education and Community Development.

We honor and protect each student's unique being and inherently creative spark. They are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions, and to learn and teach in ways that work best for them integrating Social Emotional Learning and design thinking . Against all odds- finance, religion, gender, disabilities, domestic violence, health and hygiene- they all have a dream to achieve.

In a community which gives them a lot of surprises and despair, they walk around with an air of confidence to face challenges. They are very much interested in academics and extra-curricular activities. Like last two years, our kids are looking forward to their daily classroom activities, sport , arts, study tours and all sorts of access and exposures along with their academic goals. We have a year-long plan and opportunities ready for them, but what we lack are resources and financial support.
