The people living on the fringes of North and South 24 parganas districts of West Bengal are vulnerable to multiple threats. The area is remote and frequently ravaged by natural disasters like Amphan and Yaas. To add to that, proximity to porous Indo-Bangladesh borders leads to rampant human trafficking.

The children are even more vulnerable, facing the constant threat of abuse and exploitation, child labour, early marriage, trafficking and lack of access to affordable accessible education.

In this landscape, one woman dreamed of giving these children not just an education, but a holistic world class education. She is Ms Satarupa Majumder, Founder of Swapnopuron Welfare Society. Herself a teacher for 15+ years, she started Swapnopuron in 2012, personally travelling to Hingalganj by boat and teaching 25 children every Saturday. Today, Swapnopuron runs 6 English medium, CBSE-based schools in multiple locations in and around Hingalganj and employs 20+ teachers. Most of the children enrolled in these schools are first generation learners, and over time, are beginning to inspire their families and the local community to educate their children. In addition to the core service of education, Swapnopuron has also done extensive relief work for the community during the difficult times of Amphan, Yaas and Covid lockdowns.

Through tireless efforts of our teaching staff, Swapnopuron was able to continue the education of 705 enrolled students online. For the students who did not have any device to attend online classes, our teachers crossed rivers and walked for miles to hand-deliver worksheets to the children. 

This fundraiser will help Swapnopuron continue its services and provide world class education to the children of Sunderbans despite the pandemic and cyclones.
