Greetings,
I am Kasturi Ghosh, an English graduate with an Hons degree from Jamia Millia Islamia. I graduated in 2021 and have been the topper in my batch. I had been offered a place to study at Birkbeck College, University of London in 2021 for MA in Psychoanalytic Studies but I got my admission deferred due to the uncertainty posed by the Covid-19 situation across the globe and the financial crisis of my family. The past few years have been very difficult for our family both financially and mentally.
My father worked for an English newspaper but had been almost at the brink of barely making ends meet for the past two years because of the pandemic induced economic crisis. There had been times when he couldn’t receive the salaries of two or three consecutive months. On the 10th of June, this month, he passed away which has not only shattered us emotionally, but has added to the economic pressure that we already were in. My brother with his job has been helping the family remain afloat with the bare minimum for the past 1 year and now has to shoulder greater responsibilities. Additionally, my mother started a cloud kitchen in Gurgaon in the hope of contributing in some or the other way but it has incurred more debts and has made it even more difficult for us. We also have an old grandmother who is completely dependent on us. A family of four, the financial future of which, depends on my brother and I now.
I have been a passionate student of psychology and literature and it has been my dream to pursue academics as my career. I have a very strong grasp of and inclination towards literary theory which I want to integrate with psychoanalysis. My area of interest is around Psychoanalysis and sexuality which I want to explore through literary theory. Studying English Literature at Jamia Millia Islamia, helped me in harnessing my potential towards a successful start of an academic journey. I had been very active in university journals and was even a member of the university campus journal. I am currently associated with Mukti Foundation in Lucknow as their content head, which works towards the development of underprivileged children and women. I have also worked on independent research projects and freelance writing as part of my work experience. Furthermore, I have also worked with Capicoc, a digital marketing brand, as a junior content writer.
Studying at Birkbeck will give me the appropriate academic exposure and will help ease the process of pursuing a PhD in psychoanalysis as well. Presently, very few colleges in the world offer Psychoanalysis as a distinct course in itself and this would prove to be a great opportunity for me. Moreover, going to the UK will help me contribute to the financial situation and home and help my family stand back on its feet, since my brother and I are the only hopes of the family now. The biggest problem is the funding and I hope that through this platform I am able to get some help to achieve my dream. My tuition fees is 16,380 pound sterling which is approximately 15,98,620 rupees and my living allowance is 12,000 pound sterling which is approximately 11,71,245 rupees. This makes it a total of around 28 lac rupees. If I am able to raise this amount, I will be able to pursue a dream that I never thought I could. I request you to please help me and contribute however much you can. Even a little amount from your side will help take the numbers up.
I will always remain indebted to each of you who will make it possible for me to achieve success in the academic field. I will forever remain grateful to you.
Thank you.
