Handloom and weavers are the primary artisanal craftsmen in India, contributing to the
country's economy and culture. Handloom is an investment for the future – it preserves and
promotes India's rich heritage by way of thousands of tiny villages across rural India.
Using handlooms is a much more sustainable process than using power looms and therefore
handloom weavers are essential to preserving our environment.
And yet, with a dynamic economy weavers, especially women weavers are left on the
sidelines and have been having to deal with difficult circumstances for the last two years.
In Maheswar, an extremely talented weaving cluster in Madhya Pradesh, most weavers have
been struck by the pandemic severely and the recovery is still far from reach. Basic needs
and security have been at stake.
Through your support and donations, we want to enable the following for our community of
1. Create opportunities for single women weavers, older and widowed women weavers
to be able to participate in the workforce again so they are able to support
themselves. We need to support buying more looms for them to be able to do this.
2. The raw material that is needed to weave fabric is more expensive due to inflation
and that has resulted in our income taking a hit. Therefore, investing in looms has
become all the more difficult. More looms mean more people are able to be
independent. Therefore, to enable more weavers (who don't currently own their own
looms and spaces) to have a source of income, we need more looms.
3. There has been a surge of weavers who have moved back to Maheswar during
Covid as they were laid off. During the pandemic, they lost their income and are
struggling to set up a new income source for themselves and their families. We are
currently able to support 7 such women weavers and 6 such male weavers. With
your donation, we want to extend this support to more such weavers.
We love our craft and we consider it our tradition and legacy. We want to preserve it and
support everyone else who has the same dream! We need your support to keep these
dreams alive. We need your support to preserve this precious and rare talent that the young
and old weavers in Maheswar have.
Do your bit in supporting us to do the work we love while being able to support our families.
We have been weaving sarees to make each occasion in your life special, come share your
#handloomlove with us by donating to our campaign. We, the weavers of India, need your support.
