17-Year-Old Is In Critical Condition After Man Threw Acid On Her

“One man held me at gunpoint as I watched the others throw acid on my 17-year-old daughter’s face and body. She screamed in pain, but I couldn’t do anything to help her. I couldn’t get out of his grip. Once the men ran away from the house, I ran to my daughter, she was on the floor, her whole body burning as she cried and screamed. I tried to help her. I was in shock and didn’t realise that my palms too got burnt from the acid on her body, ” – Poonam Devi, mother

Just a few minutes after the gruesome incident, Kajal’s father, Gautam, and cousin brother returned home to find Kajal on the floor and her mother struggling to help her. They used a cloth to help her sit on the chair and drove her to the hospital. It was the night of 19th April, and this 17-year-old student has been fighting for her life ever since.

She has 40% burns on her body and risks being blinded for life
Kajal is a class 11 commerce student who often kept to herself and focused on her studies. On April 19th, her simple life was ravaged by a group of men who entered her house forcibly and threw acid on her when no one else but her mother and she were at home. She is now in the hospital with severe burns on her face and upper body. She can’t talk or sit up. The acid entered her eyes, she now risks being blinded for life.

Kajal needs continued hospital care and needs to stay under strict observation to survive. She is now surviving only on fluids.

Her devastated parents refuse to leave her side as she screams in pain all day
Kajal’s parents are beyond devastated. They refuse to leave the hospital until their daughter is saved. Her mother can’t help but recall the incident over and over again, breakdown every few minutes. Her father, watches on helplessly. There’s nothing he can do.

“All we want is for her to get better, we just want to take her home. She screams in pain all day and can’t even change sides on the hospital bed.She hasn’t slept ever since the incident.” – Gautam, father

As Kajal’s parents worry for her life, her medical bills are piling up with every passing day. Gautam owns a small shop in Bhagalpur and can’t afford the treatment which would cost him around 50 lakhs.

This acid attack survivor needs your help
Kajal is a survivor. She has fought hard to make it so far, but now she needs your help to make it out of this pain and trauma. Together, we can help save her life.

As on date, Rs 6 Lakhs has been withdrawn towards treatment costs.

A fundraiser was set up on Milaap, on April 21, 2019, by Mr. Shubham Kumar (campaign organizer, cousin of Kajal) towards the treatment of 17-year-old Kajal (beneficiary), post an alleged intrusion and acid attack. After verifying the authenticity with the treating hospital and financial need with the beneficiary’s family,  the fundraiser was approved to raise funds on the platform. Over the course of the past 12 days, progress on Kajal’s health and recovery and updates (with relevant pictures) have been posted on the fundraiser page, informing donors of the same. A total of fifty lakh ninety-nine thousand, five hundred and thirty-two has been raised through 3766 donors on Milaap. Once the entire amount was raised, the fundraiser was stopped on  April 27, 2019, as per the campaign organizer’s request.

As part of our follow up process, two of our team members visited the hospital met with the survivor’s father: Mr Gautam Kumar Sah, the campaign organizer: Mr Shubham Kumar, the treating doctor: Dr Jayanto Tapadar and the inspector of local police station: Mr Mohd Khan, apart from seeing Kajal who was under treatment.

After receipt of bills for the treatment paid thus far and outstanding, a cheque of INR 3 Lakh was issued in Mr. Gautam Kumar’s name and was handed over on April 30th, 2019 and another fund transfer of INR 3 Lakh was initiated as a bank transfer to the treating hospital.

Furthermore, the family has been made aware that they can request for fund transfer to the hospital or to the father’s account anytime during the course of treatment. This request can be placed directly through the campaign page, by calling us on our phone number or sending us an SMS/WhatsApp message on our number. This policy is in line with our commitment to periodically update donors on the status of the beneficiary’s treatment and progress. Any surplus funds available will be transferred to the father’s account upon Kajal’s discharge from the hospital.

Donors who contributed to this campaign were made aware of these developments through a detailed update posted on the campaign page on May 1st, 2019 (https://milaap.org/fundraisers/support-kajal-11#updates-tab), and the same has been communicated to them through email and WhatsApp.

The cheque issued to Mr. Gautam Kumar was deposited to the bank on May 3, 2019 (Friday) but since the bank branch that Gautam approached was incorrect, the payment could not be processed. We were made aware of the same on May 6, 2019 (Monday) and were informed by Mr. Gautam Kumar that it has been resubmitted for processing. Our team is in touch with the family to aid in this process.

We would like to assure that we are in constant touch with all stakeholders - the family, the hospital and the donors. They are well informed regarding the proceedings of this fundraiser and have a way to connect with Milaap directly via email, WhatsApp or phone for any issues.

Milaap’s foremost priority is to ensure trust and transparency across all stakeholders - donors, campaign organizers and beneficiaries alike with relevant processes and systems. Over the last 9 years, over 150,000 fundraisers from across India have raised Rs 550 Crores for their needs and causes.
