Joseph was gainfully employed as an aircraft spray painter at the government facility in bangalore, while supporting his young family.In september 2013 he was the victim of a road traffic accident when his 2-wheeler was hit by a car. He suffered multiple life-threatening injuries and his right leg was amputated above the knee. Recovery was long and painful and multiple surgeries followed. Initially he was fitted with a jaipur foot and a light leg and used this for a year. In 2015 his stump was shortened and he progressed to using a hydraulic leg, but has to change the liners/sockets every 3 to 6 months and struggles with mobility.  His issues include chaffing, heat sores, ulcers and frequent separation of the stump from the socket which limits his walking.  In 2014 joseph was assessed as having seventy five percent permanent disability by the karnataka state medical board. Throughout joseph has shown a fierce determination to walk and work. He started back as an auto-rickshaw driver and now has a small paint spraying shop, but currently struggles to complete routine tasks and support his family.The osseointegrated limb system is new to india and currently the press-fit osseointegration is only performed by dr. Aditya khemka in mumbai. Joseph has recently driven over 1000km to mumbai in preparation for this surgery, which should afford him the ability to walk and perform activities like an able bodied person.
