On the afternoon of 19th February 2025, we received an urgent call from the panchayat; a dog, struck by a motorcycle the night before, had been crawling in agony all day, dragging her left leg behind. Villagers offered food and water, but didn’t know what to do. We found her hidden amongst some logs, terrified and crying out. We carefully muzzled her, placed her on a board, and took her to a clinic, where X-rays revealed a severe spinal fracture.

Time was critical. Spinal surgery was her only chance. So, with the support of our rescue team, Jibbu embarked on a careful journey to Bangalore to face the fight of her life.

The total cost of Jibbu’s surgery was ₹40,000, thanks to the kindness of a surgeon in Bangalore who gave us a 50% discount to assist this sweet homeless dog. Following the surgery, she received post-operative care, laser therapy, and treatment for a dormant tick fever that aggressively resurfaced due to her weakened condition, nearly costing Jibbu her life. The expenses incurred for these additional treatments came to ₹46,000, purely for medical bills, adding up to a total of ₹86,000.

After almost two weeks of intensive care in Bangalore, we slowly drove Jibbu back to Wayanad, where she remains under full-time observation, with carefully prepared meals, a long list of medicines and supplements, and several physiotherapy sessions a day.

Jibbu's fight is just one example of the crisis unfolding in Wayanad. Paws in Wayanad Animal Sanctuary Foundation is working on a solution for lasting change in Kerala’s poorest district, which desperately lacks veterinary care. Life-saving rescues, preventative care, vaccination programmes and spay-neutering camps are just a few ways in which we are laying the groundwork for this change. Our team has established a solid track record and a concrete plan to set up Wayanad’s first 24/7 clinic and shelter.
Your kind donation will directly contribute to Jibbu's healing, allowing her to take her first careful steps toward a new future. Additionally, it will enable us to broaden our efforts, ensuring that Wayanad’s neglected animals receive the care they so badly require.
