Jan Sahas has been working in 8 different districts of Bihar including Patna, Rohtas, Jehanabad and Nalanda since 2011. The organisation has two major programs working with survivors of sexual violence and bonded labour. They ensure supply of one month of essential commodities as a norm to help them tide over past trauma and difficulties.

Towards the Covid-19 response, the proposed intervention is focused on providing rations to families whose main breadwinners are migrant labourers in addition to being in manual scavenging, survivors of sexual violence, and former bonded labours, and have lost their daily wage due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

The proposed area of intervention, Bihar state, accounts for ~80 lakh migrants (2011 census). Currently, the largest number of trains taking migrants back (30 trains with a capacity of 1200 each) are also to Bihar. As migrants move back, with no pay and no work, their lives will be under tremendous strain.

Jan Sahas plans to address the issue of food insecurity due to loss of livelihood by providing comprehensive dry ration kits that will last a five-member family for up to 25 days, to 1100 vulnerable families in Bihar specifically Patna, Rohtas, Jehanabad, and Nalanda.

Jan Sahas has its presence in the rural and urban areas of other 48 districts of 5 states, has a staff of 231 people, and is involved in national level policy initiatives with the government and UN Agencies.
