We need drastic and timely measures that are commensurate with the scale of the crisis to survive the current Coronavirus. These measures must protect our people, in particular the most vulnerable – including the elderly, the sick and the poor.
Economic and social challenges and drastic consequences of the 2nd wave of COVID-19 pandemic on the informal sector workers such as Safai Sathis, waste picker workers, domestic workers, daily wage workers, construction workers, street vendors, auto rickshaw workers, home based workers etc have much more adverse effect. .
With factories and workplaces shut down and closed during lockdown, many workers are left with no livelihood. Many are scared that the lockdown might extend given the present situation of COVID -19. Their savings are already exhausted after the 1st lockdown. They are still under debt from the loan they had taken last year during the lockdown.
These people need immediate help and materials for their protection from COVID -19.  Lockdown-related mass unemployment is pushing large numbers of the working poor in search of food. The current focus is on health responses and social distancing. These people without economic and social support, and worrying about how to feed their families and earn an income, and cannot, even if they wanted to, practice social distancing and responsible health practices.
