Across India, an estimated 32 million children have no access to education. Despite pledges to bring education to all, children from deprived rural communities are being left behind, cutting short their ability to fulfill their potential.

At India Tribal Care Trust, we believe that education is a right and is a fundamental step in bringing meaningful development to India’s rural community. To combat the injustices tribal children are experiencing through lack of education, we are seeking funding to launch 30 pathshala schools providing free, high quality education to tribal children across India.

Pathshala or informal schools are a low-cost solution for helping young people from highly deprived tribal families to flourish. We currently run pathshalas in 5 states: West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Jharkhand and Odisha.

Pathshalas provide village children with daily education on topics including primary school syllabus and cover topics such as Maths and English. Passionate teachers inspire and motivate young minds, with a ratio of one teacher for every twenty students to guarantee each child is able to truly benefit from their teacher’s time and guidance.

We work with tribal communities where there are no nearby primary schools, or where the local school is failing. We gain community buy-in from elders and parents, explaining the importance of the pathshala and how it can bring education and literacy to the village’s children. Expert teachers are placed at schools within community spaces (e.g village meeting halls), meaning children do not have to travel far to access good quality education.

Education plays an essential role in securing economic and social progress and improving income distribution. Without it, Indians from tribal backgrounds remain isolated and deprived, unable to equitably share in the gains made since Independence.

Your donation will help children to break intergenerational cycles of poverty and inaccess to education, improve their future prospects and ultimately secure meaningful employment that will lift their families, and by extension their wider community, out of poverty. Invest in India’s children
