The Khadija-Mariyam Foundation is a collective working for women’s empowerment. As part of our initiatives for this cause, the Foundation is working to build a community centre exclusively for women in Kozhikode, India.
This project is twofold. At the very outset, we address the primary concerns of women of our times by providing a domestic violence shelter, legal aid, and a space for shared learning. Along with this, as a parallel priority, we are responding to the difficulties and inadequacies faced by women in the Muslim community by providing accessible spaces for learning, exposure, and prayer.
Background
Gender disparities remain in spheres ranging from the sex ratio to the domestic sphere to education to the workplace. In this context, women’s holistic development in society requires services such as domestic violence shelters, legal aid, and spaces for learning, which the Khadija-Mariyam Foundation aims to provide through its community centre.
Spaces for spiritual development are an indispensable need for the community. Kozhikode being a predominantly Muslim area, the Khadija-Mariyam Foundation aims to have a prayer space and space for the spiritual development of Muslim women.
In this context, the Khadija-Mariyam Foundation is working to build a community centre and prayer space exclusively for women. Building a space like this has been a dream for us and many other women and men from our community. We have taken the initiative to build this space for the women of our community in order to break religious and caste barriers and provide opportunities for women to develop in all aspects of life. Founded by women and run through the efforts of a dedicated team, the Khadija-Mariyam Foundation is working to make this dream a reality.
Objective
The Khadija-Mariyam Foundation aims to work for the educational, social, intellectual, spiritual, and interactive development of women. The principal objective of the Foundation encompasses three overarching themes in relation to women's lives:
The goal amount will be used for the phase 1 of this project as outlined in the table below.
