Gender inequality has been a social issue in India for centuries. That in many parts of India, the birth of a girl child is not welcomed is a known fact. Discrimination starts from even before the girl child is born and sometimes, she is killed as a fetus, and if she manages to see the light of day, she is killed as an infant, which makes up the highly skewed child sex ratio where for every 1000 boys in India, there are only 908 girls.

These discriminatory attitudes toward sex have existed for generations and affect the lives of both sexes. Although the constitution of India grants men and women equal rights, gender disparities remain. Research shows gender discrimination mostly in favor of men in many realms including the workplace.

Sacred architecture has followed suit, highlighting the role of men and concepts of masculinity. Even religious professions are male-dominated. Sacred architecture has diminished the presence of women, sometimes to the point of their exclusion. In other cases, women are not excluded but are relegated to spaces separate from those of men. This is problematic when one considers that segregation of gender is correlated to the lower status of women.
Architectural historian Daphne Spain argues that the spatial segregation of women has kept them from accessing knowledge that has allowed men to hold power. By disregarding women’s roles in religion and religious spaces, society is reaffirming a patriarchal religious narrative that women are less valuable.

This is why building a space like this has been a dream for us and many other women and men from our community. We have taken the initiation to build this space for the women of our community in order to break religious and caste barriers and provide opportunities and chances for women and children. To make this dream come true we have formed a trust with the name Khadija Mariyam Foundation.

The principal objective of the Trust encompasses three overarching themes in relation to women's lives:

  • To Provide necessary amenities,
  • To Present opportunities for growth and
  • To Identify issues that are in violation of their rights and ensure protection and sustenance of the same.

Necessary amenities-
  • To facilitate economic empowerment through employment opportunities.
  • To provide preferential opportunities to bring women to an equal footing with men.
  • To provide a day-care facility for children under the age of 12.
  • To provide a place of stay for travelling and local women.
  • To provide a space of prayer exclusive to women.

Opportunities for growth
  • To transcend religious and caste barriers by opening multiple doors for cultural enrichment and educational development with the provision for equitable facilities for all women.
  • To provide a space for holistic development through sports, education, critical thinking, religious interaction etc and to establish equity in
religious hierarchy.

Identify issues and provide sustainable solutions
  • To provide shelter homes and a conducive environment for those undergoing abuse including physical, mental/emotional, sexual, monetary, cyber offences etc.
