Run Over By A Truck, 9-Year-Old Boy Has No Family To Help Him

“A truck came out of nowhere and ran over a child who was playing on his bicycle. I was standing afar. By the time I got to the spot there was a huge crowd. I could not see who the child was. As people cleared way, I realized that he is my student. He had just lost his mother, and now he was lying there with the bottom half of his body completely mangled. Everyone was just watching and shooting videos. Nobody helped.” – Shelly aka Shannowaz Mazumdar, Government School Teacher, Goalpara, Assam.

On 22nd February, sisters Sewli and Shelly rushed a barely alive 9-year-old Hasem Ali to the best nursing home they could find in Goalpara. They knew that the boy had nobody to fight for him, and took it upon themselves to save his life, and give him a future he much deserves. This is their story.

Nobody even thought to check if he was alive

Hasem lost his mother on 12th February to a mystery illness. She was the responsible parent, who worked as a housemaid to support the family. His father, Kader, a rickshaw-wala suffers from a mental illness. He and Hasem's cousin rushed to the spot after the accident. She drew him onto her lap, and swept his mangled leg towards his body so nobody steps on him. Kader kept wailing. Bystanders kept watching, clicking photos, videos and walked. The family thought he was dead.

“Nobody even checked if he was alive. Nobody was stopping any vehicle. People kept staring and passing by. I asked her to see if he was breathing. He was. There was a painter. He threw Hasem’s cycle in the middle of the road hoping that will stop someone. We finally managed to stop a vehicle and rushed him to the best hospital in town. You have to understand, this is a small town and even the best hospital is not equipped to deal with a trauma like this.” – Sewli aka Showeb-ara-Shaheed Mazumdar, Supervisor at Ministry of Women and Child Welfare, ICDS, Goalpara, Assam

Hasem's father is missing, just like the truck driver who ran over him

The truck driver and owner are missing. They did not have insurance and evaded arrest. Once he realized that his son was alive, Hasem's father left the hospital and never returned. He did not even have a rupee in his pocket, and was burdened by the responsibility of caring for his crippled son. Shelly and Sewli paid admission fees and began raising funds in the neighborhood so they could start Hasem’s treatment. Sewli’s experience in the system, equipped her to liaise with doctors and get Hasem the care he needs.

“His leg was in such a bad state and infected. They had to amputate immediately. He could not be given anesthesia since he had eaten just before the accident. They numbed him waist down, and performed the surgery. He also has a head injury, and we may have to amputate a few fingers on his right hand. We explained the situation to everyone. The doctor did not charge any consultation fee, the medical shop has been giving medicines at a subsidized rate. Our neighbors are taking turns to stay by his side.” – Shelly

This fight is far from over for Hasem, and a whole family is fighting for him to survive
Although they managed to raise a few thousand to start treatment, Sewli realized it was not enough. She called her cousin, Abu, a software engineer in Guwahati and requested for help. Along with his friends, Abu started a crowdfunding campaign to save Hasem.

“Owing to the town, and facilities, basic care has been given. Hasem has an infection and it is spreading. If it affects his kidneys, then it is only a matter of time before the other organs start failing. The doctors have said he needs specialized care, available in Bangalore, Delhi or Chennai. The father does not really care. Whatever family Hasem has left, cannot help him. We are ready to take him, stay with him, and get him through this, but we cannot afford the expense. Already, the hospital bills have been piling up. That’s why Abu started this campaign.” – Shelly

Be a part of their effort to save Hasem

Hasem is in severe pain. He is on a high dose of painkillers and antibiotics. A small town hospital was able to keep him alive, but they cannot save him for long or fix him up to live a decent life. Sewli, Shelly and Abu tell Hasem that he is not alone. He is terrified, missing his mother’s embrace but finds comfort in his teacher and her sister. The neighbourhood visits him at the hospital every day. They are praying for his recovery.

Abu, Shelly and Sewli will see this through until Hasem gets an artificial leg and goes back to normal school life. All they need is a little help from you.

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for your love.

As per the doctors, medicine and all were not working as expected & the reason behind was his mental position. Hasem was in hospital for many months continuously due to his severe infection. Its is cured almost but he needed a break from this hospital life.... doctor released him from hospital for some days... just for a break from hospital, so that he gets better mentally and also gave him some exercises to do. He is using his power wheelchair.

He is still at his hometown on break, appeared for his mid term school exam & he will be back to hospital for his final and last surgery  as the main doctor is out of station, so the doctor postponed the operation date to 24th July 2019.

And after this surgery, he need to wait 180 days to start using his artificial limb. And that would bring him back to normal life.
Thanks for asking, we really appreciate that you still remember. Its hard to find !

Will keep updating.

Dear Supporters,

Thank you supporters & thank you Milaap, without both of you, it was never possible to raise fund upto 15 lacs in just three days.

He has been brought from his home town, Goalpara to Guwahati City, Approximately 150 Kms far. And we successfully got Hasem admitted to Apollo Hospital (Guwahati) on 23rd March 2019, & paid initial advance payment of INR. 1.6 Lac as security to Hospital out of the fund we have arranged for him. He will be getting the best possible medical treatment required to get him back to a normal school going kid using prosthetic limb.

It was really tough to keep him back to hospital.

He is just 9yrs old, lost his mother few days back and now lost his leg, he is in trauma, He thought that he may get more hurt in this new hospital, "Apollo Hospital" as doctor started examining as he just entered.

He literally run up to the entrance of the hospital, jumping using his one leg & crying loud, "Saying that he want to go back & do not want to stay". His amputated leg start bleeding.

It was really difficult to hold him back at hospital. Somehow we showed videos of Major DP Singh ( an Indian soldier lost his leg in Kargil & now a marathan runner using Prosthetic limb),  said that one day he will also run like him,  Somehow we convince him and got him inside the hospital. He asked whether doctor will operate him again? We were bound to lie him & we said no! ,  he will only get medicine, no operation. And he was admitted to hospital finally.

There was no cabin available, he need an attendant all the time because of his amputation. There was no cabin available, we got one General Bed in general Surgical ward & his next bed to him was a mentally sick patient - and that mentally sick patient again came to hit this 9yr old boy, We cannot say anything as that person is also sick,  the ward boys stopped him & tied the mentally sick patient up with his bed. The kid again got scared and started crying.

We requested the management to provide a cabin immediately. They helped us to get a cabin as luckily one patient from a cabin no-221 got shifted to ICU and we took that cabin.

Than he was much comfortable, as you can see in the picture below that he is watching some video on his cousin's mobile phone.

He will need a special custom made prosthetic limb as the general one will not work as his leg has been cut just below the hips, has got little thigh left. As we have funds, so we are planning to get him a custom made prosthetic limb like Major DP Singh, after all he is 9yrs old and has a long life to live.

And the prosthetic limb comes much later, now he have to go through several surgery, part by part. Its going to take a month or more, doctor said. His right hand finger also need to be operated to make it functioning.

His infection is under control and He will go for his first surgery this coming Wednesday, 27-03-2019.

We will need 2 unit of A+ blood for his first surgery.
Mr. Pradip Pathak, working in the administrative section of Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Govt. Hospital, Guwahati - Offered 2 units of blood for him. We thanked him for his gesture of kindness.

All we wanted, is to get Hasem back to normal life again, Don't know how everything falling perfect (touchwood).

Remind me a dialogue by Sharukh Khan- "Kehte hain agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho … to poori kainath use tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai ". And its coming true, if you want to help someone, nothing can stop you!

Thanks to each and every hero who supported. Only donation of money is not called support, even a share over social network & whatsApp, requesting others to support the cause financially is also consider to be a big support.

Life is not just enjoying, earning, spending & living your own life for your own name and fame only, Life is lot more than that - where we do have a little time for others as well. All it needs, a heart to feel the pain & little love for those whom you dont even know!

Once more we need you support, not financial this time but we request you to pray for this little boy  quick recovery.
