Help the Green Warriors of our Streets - Sanitation Workers

It’s 10pm IST.
In Pallavaram, the roads are deserted, but for Mariappan and Nalini. Despite the Covid19 lockdown, these two are out on the roads, doing their job. They are sanitation workers or Green Friends as we call them, and their job is to clean the roads, sanitize areas with disinfectants and to conduct door-to-door waste collection every morning.

The pandemic has brought in all of us fear, but in Mariappan and Nalini, it has only brought out their grit and resolve. The pandemic has also highlighted the need to do more for the sanitary workers of our country.

Imagine your town or city without these workers cleaning it! Aren’t they real warriors preventing the spread of infection, day in and day out?

The Cause - An Urgent Appeal
Mariappan and Nalini are part of the 1500 Green Friends or sanitary workers that are part of Hand In Hand India’s Solid Waste Management wing. They work in smaller towns of Tamil Nadu such as  Sriperumbudur, Pallavaram, Mahabalipuram, Kundrathur, Mangadu and more, serving around 200,000 households.

As we stay safe in the cozy confines of our home, these workers continue to render essential sanitary services to maintain clean surroundings. While they are paid their salaries and are provided with protective equipment such as masks and gloves, they are finding it very difficult to balance their finances, given the current situation. These workers not only do the job of cleaning, but they also spread the message of keeping surroundings clean.

We at Hand in Hand India, appeal to you to help us provide these green warriors with a small but significant contribution of INR 1500/-. Your contribution will help provide a sanitary worker and his family with essential groceries for a month.

Meet Mariappan - Help him and his co-workers!
Mariappan is our Green Friend; he is in his 40s and has been with Hand in Hand India's Solid Waste Management for many years now. While his regular day starts at 6 a.m, these days things are different.
“I have to clean the streets, dustbins and also spray disinfectant around residential localities. We also use bleaching powder around public places.” It’s a tough job but he does it with a smile, “It seems my job today is the most important one next to that of a doctor or nurse! It makes me proud to serve my fellow-citizens”.

About Us
We are Hand in Hand India, a not for profit organization that works to alleviate poverty through job creation across India. One of our key interventions is Municipal Solid Waste Management and Waste-to-energy solutions. We work in tier-2 localities across 7 states in India with a vision to send less waste to landfills.
Our Green Friends, as we call the sanitation workers, ensure door to door waste collection, transportation and treatment of waste at various projects without interruption.   Apart from their regular waste collection, green friends are providing awareness on social distancing, hand washing, etc., as a precaution to stay safe from the spread of the pandemic.  They also support the initiatives of the government for ensuring social distance at public places such as markets, ration and provision shops.

Last week, our supporter Anu Hasan spoke to one of our Green warriors - Muniyammal. They spoke about the problems faced by the workers and how they are more than happy to lend a hand in keeping the towns clean. Watch and share.
The campaign is open and we hope to receive more support. Spread the word!
