In a society where Transgender communities face great social stigma that does not allow them basic rights and access to spaces, the Manthithoppu Transgenders Milk Cooperative Society, in Sandeep Nagar, Tamil Nadu, is a lease of fresh air. Set up by the efforts of activist Grace Banu, the Sandeep Nagar community is the first of its kind that aims to provide its residents housing and work opportunities, the cooperative being one of them. 

The Cooperative is an initiative that has provided its members with a sense of dignity and agency as the Covid-19 pandemic has ravaged rural economies. Since the cooperative is in its first few months of functioning, it is still to reach its break even point and to realize its dream of economic independence. Till now the efforts of the Cooperative have been supported by local administration and allies. Now we look towards the larger community to make this dream possible.
