Three weeks ago, a resident in Hapur, a small town in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, posted a heartbreaking video of a disabled female stray dog. Her hind legs bent, a front limb missing, and so thin that her ribs were visible, she was hungrily lunging at each biscuit thrown at her. That is how we discovered Pearl.
The video was a small glimpse into how tough the life of a stray dog, that too one with only one properly functional limb (that too is bent), is on the streets. A few days later, Pearl was brought from Hapur to Delhi. She is smaller than she looks in the video, and arrived in a heap of newspapers sleeping on the floor of a car. She was immediately taken to a vet clinic, where X-rays revealed that her condition stemmed from old, untreated injuries, and hence were fairly permanent. The vet said Pearl was probably hit by an irresponsible driver, who didn’t bother to stop to pick up her mangled body and rush her to a hospital, which is even more improbable due to a general lack of awareness and concern for stray animals in India.
At the clinic, she got her first ever bath. Finally rid of the countless ticks and fleas crawling over her, she probably slept peacefully on a soft bedsheet for the first time in her life – it was a sight that would reduce anyone to tears.
Despite the pain and trauma she has clearly endured, Pearl has stolen the hearts of everyone with the amount of love she has given everyone who has been part of her rescue journey. She is now safe in an animal sanctuary in Haryana, but after years of suffering, she deserves, and needs, more individual attention and the comfort of a home.
Through some very dedicated people, Pearl has found a mother – Caroline Blose – who has adopted her and is eagerly waiting to welcome her to her home in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. Caroline has not only adopted several special needs dogs, but has also fostered many more. Pearl is set for a fairytale life with Caroline, who has already fallen in love with her.
Pearl now needs your help. Sending her to the USA is an expensive task, and while she has an army of well wishers rallying behind her, they need financial support to send her to the home she deserves, where she will always be loved and cared for.
Help us give her, her happily ever after.
