What is Yuwa?
Yuwa School, an all-girls academy for underprivileged girls in rural Jharkhand, empowers young women with the skills and confidence required to break out of the cycle of poverty--permanently. Yuwa’s holistic and intensive program enables girls to become leaders and role models in their own communities, powerfully taking their futures into their own hands.
The coronavirus pandemic has been disproportionately catastrophic for young women in rural areas who have already worked so hard to pursue their own education. With schools shuttered and job opportunities suspended, families in Jharkhand are forcing their underage daughters into marriages at much higher rates.
Yuwa School is committed to keeping 100% of our 95 students free from the shattering consequences of child marriage. Distance education--led by Yuwa’s team of 10 qualified and passionate teachers--is essential, regardless of the connectivity challenges. Yuwa School has been running remote education programs since April, and officially launched our 2020-2021 academic year on June 8th.
Due to the pandemic, Yuwa has lost funding for this year that had previously been confirmed. We are in desperate need of funding for the 2020-21 school year to support our teaching staff and young coaches.
All funds raised through the Run for Yuwa campaign will go directly towards teachers' salaries. Yuwa is registered as a Trust in India and as a 501c(3) in the US. Please visit our our website to learn more!
Run with Yuwa
After making your recommended donation of 3000 inr ($40), email run@yuwa-india.org with your name and running goal (5k, 10k half marathon, or full marathon). The Yuwa team will send you a weekly motivational email in the lead-up to the Run with Yuwa event on November 7th, including fun training tips from the Yuwa students themselves and stories from Yuwa School!
What if I can't run?
If you can't run, you can set a personal "movement" goal on November 7th. Maybe you can walk for 30 minutes, ride an equivalent distance on a stationary bicycle, swim, kayak, or even do yoga. If you can't run, you are still very welcome to participate!
