On the 20th of April, my aunt was infected with Covid-19. Initially, she just brushed it off and continued to go to work. She had received one dose of the vaccine but the second dose was out of stock and therefore she wasn't fully protected. Over the coming few days, her body pains grew worse and the fever did not subside. As time went on, her breathing became difficult and we knew she needed oxygen. Luckily, at this stage oxygen shortage was still not a widespread issue and we could admit her in a private hospital. She was in the ICU for 2 weeks before she could be discharged to the general wards.
This story is just one among the many rich and middle class families who, by sheer luck, could afford healthcare for their loved ones. However, India is not made up these families. A majority of the population are the ones who run operations that ensure we have comfortable lives: the taxi drivers, the delivery men, the maids, the milkman, the ironer, the auto rickshaw driver. These men and women are the silent heroes of our societies and are the most impacted by the second wave. They have neither the financial not social means to afford healthcare during a time like this.
A lot of donations have focused on oxygen concentrators, ventilators, testing kits and vaccines, however, the real victims need cash and assistance immediately. This charity aims to bring assistance directly to these assistance.
Here is a breakdown of where the funds will be used:
40% purchase of meals for 1 month for the needy
20% direct cash to the homeless and employees of businesses directly affected by the second wave
20% medicinal supplies for victims unable to afford hospitalization
20% purchase of 2 months of mask supply, hand sanitizers and Vit C for the silent victims.
Every single rupee donated matters, don't allow the hidden victims of the pandemic die in vain.
