NALSAR for the COVID-19 Migrant Workers Crisis

Tax benefits
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought untold suffering to our already vulnerable workers who have migrated across states for their livelihoods. State responses to the pandemic have sometimes left migrant workers across the country stranded in locations far away from their homes, often without food, water and accommodation. In the absence of adequate state transport, many migrants have started journeys of thousands of kilometres on foot or using unsustainable forms of transport. In the face of this humanitarian crisis, the NALSAR family - students and alumni - are stepping in to arrange transport for workers who are trying to get home through the quickest and most efficient means possible. Our civil society collaborators are working on the ground to ensure that those most in need are prioritised. In addition to travel, we are raising funds for food distribution, medical kits and sanitation packs for the workers in this predicament.

This is our turn to support the most marginalised communities in our country in a time of unprecedented need. Donations will be received into the account of an NGO run by one of our own alums and are eligible for 80G tax exemption. There will be clear transparency and accountability in the use of the funds. Please fill out this form ->  https://forms.gle/QeihKAerS856ZWoW6 if you make a donation to enable us to account appropriately.

Please pitch in with whatever you can share. Any amount is helpful.

Dear Supporters,

We would like to thank you for your contribution. We have ended the fundraiser, and will be using the remaining funds for immediate relief projects to provide food, health kits and travel assistance to migrant workers. This would include projects in cyclone-affected areas of Assam and Maharashtra.

Thank you for your generous support towards our work!

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for generous support to our campaign. With your contribution, we have been able to undertake the following projects in the past week:

1. In collaboration with Social Data Initiatives Forum (Freeration app), we helped fund dry ration kits for approximately 415 families (predominantly Hyderabad; some rural AP and Telangana, where aid hasn’t reached and the need is pressing). The cost of ration for a family for a week is capped at INR 600 and contain staples (rice, atta, dal, sugar, oil, basic masalas, soap).

2. In collaboration with Prantojon, we funded the delivery of tarpaulin sheets, sanitary napkins, and soaps in Hingalganj, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

3. In association with the Stronger Kolkata Initiative, we assisted in the delivery of tarpaulin sheets, mosquito coils, soaps, and candles for 500 families in Raidighi, Sunderbans. At the same time, we also funded the delivery of ration kits costing INR 318 per week, per family to the the same 500 families.

4. We funded the provision of 30 dry ration kits for families in 4 villages in Giridh, Jharkhand in association with GEMS Seva. These kits included rice, wheat, dal, turmeric powder, coriander, chilli powder, oil, potatoes and salt.

Through your contribution, we have been able to provide 4000+ meals, ration for 1185 families, health kits to 700 families, and travel for 700+ workers. We are still receiving multiple requests to provide travel assistance, food and health/hygiene supplies to hundreds of people all across India. We are trying our best to respond to each of these requests. We look forward to your continued support.

Thank you!
