Vidarbha region consist of 11 districts of northern Maharashtra, India. Vidarbha holds two-thirds of Maharashtra's mineral resources and three-quarters of its forest resources, and is a net producer of power. Yet, it is most infamous for farmers suicides in India. As per latest farmers suicide report Maharashtra recorded the highest number suicide (37.51%) out of India’s total of 10677 in 2020. And in Maharashtra, Vidarbha region accounted for over 50% farmers suicides.
It is ironic that farmers, despite toiling throughout the year are gradually pushed to take the extreme step of committing suicide. Such inhumane and deplorable situation of farmers are due to a number of factors like crop failures, indebtedness, rising production costs and decreasing productivity etc. The high drought proneness of the region aggravates the situation even further.
Acknowledging the critical situation and the need for systematic interventions, Krushi Vikas has been working on climate resilient agriculture, natural resource management, livelihoods diversification, promotion of Community Based Organizations in the region.
