Families in India hit by the pandemic

    from New Delhi, Delhi

Since April 22th, India recorded more than 300,000 novel COVID cases per day. There have been at least 2,000 recorded deaths each day, and these are widely believed to be underreported numbers. This is the worst COVID-19 outbreak the world has ever seen, and it is made worse by systemic neglect and acute shortage of resources.

In the absence of a national or formal plan of action, individuals and organizations have taken things in their own hands - using social media to connect those in need with medical and sustenance resources. In India, it is not just the virus that is claiming lives but also starvation, exhaustion, inadequate infrastructure and suicide - the tragedy is one of institutional neglect. Whether it’s the lack of recognition of their right to safe work or even the seizing of human rights, this effect of this tragedy extends deep into their families, health, and well-being, and will have long term implications.

We are a collective of student volunteers from universities in the US, UK, and India raising funds for organizations that are providing much-needed relief work in India. A few dollars can make a monumental change in the lives of people across the country at the moment. Your contribution will ensure that people across the country can get what they need to survive.

The organizations we are currently raising funds for are:

The Migrant Workers Solidarity Network has been undertaking relief efforts amongst daily wage migrant workers in different villages of central and northern India, including Delhi-NCR region.  They provide ration and pay for medical and transport bills and are also running a national helpline. They are working to get official recognition for the migrant crisis, in the absence of which there is no government support. Read more about the Covid migrant crisis in India here.

Mehram Kashmir is an organization committed to the upliftment and assistance of women in Kashmir against gender-based violence. They are calling for donations to buy medical supplies for families in Kashmir affected by the second wave of COVID-19. The ongoing conflict in Kashmir has resulted in poor welfare infrastructure, and the wellbeing of the people is rarely considered.

The Tedhi Lakeer Foundation serves rural communities in Nagda, Madhya Pradesh. They are in urgent need of funds for supplies for families that have lost their livelihoods due to the lockdown in the area.

The Moitri Sanjog Society is a community-based collective of transgender people, GNC people and sex workers in Cooch Behar, north Bengal. The state has been severely impacted by the second wave of infections, no lockdowns have been imposed, and the workers are left to fend for themselves. The organisation is buying masks, sanitizer, dettol, vitamins and medicines to ensure that the community’s basic healthcare needs are met and they can still go out and earn a living in the safest way possible.

The situation is worsening each day with experts saying that the worst is yet to come in May. The organisations we are working for address the needs of those who are socially and legally marginalised. Their pre-covid conditions were already abysmal and this added crisis has left them completely overwhelmed. Each of us wishes we could do more to help, but providing financial support is the least we can do at this moment, we urge you to do the same.
