About us
Sowmya, Hari and Ravi Narayan returned to India in 2003, after about 15 years in the US. They decided on Bangalore as their home and currently reside in Jakkur village in North Bangalore. Ravi currently runs an IT services company founded in and based out of NJ.

The family for the last two generations has believed in education as a means of giving back to community. Some years ago, Sowmya started home-tutoring the maid’s daughter, 10 year old Ramya Raja. Ramya responded so well that she decided to move her from the local Kannada-medium government school to Kenny English school. Today is Ramya is in 9th grade and consistently stands first in her class

Sowmya now home-tutors a total of 6 children; She also teaches full-time at KES handling various subjects for grades 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Ravi teaches Physics for grade 10.

Background of TEC
The Erudite Child (TEC) is a charity started by the Narayans, to provide education to under-privileged children; It is approved under section 80G of the IT act, which means that your donations are tax deductible. Its primary focus today is the children of Kenny English School which is striving hard to provide quality education to its students. TEC provides the fiscal discipline that is otherwise lacking at KES; All donations to the school are made directly to the respective recipients like the salaries that have been paid directly to teachers; TEC has also made payments directly to carpenters, civil contractors, government agencies, book publishers etc. Through funding from friends and family, TEC has completed multiple CAPEX projects in the last couple of years, like:
  • Replacing the benches and desks from K to 10
  • Replacing the teachers’ chairs
  • Constructing a new classroom
  • Buying pedestal fans
  • Supporting the Sports Day operations
  • Funding the salaries of teachers in the last two years
In keeping with TEC’s philosophy of financial self-reliance, TEC also supports older college-going students at Nagajuna College and NTTF

Programs for you to participate
Salary funding:
Of the many programs available, we specially want to focus on the Salary funding for every month, which is very critical to hiring and retaining good quality teachers; The current monthly salary expense stands at Rs1,30,000; With rising inflation and attempts to hire better quality teachers this number is expected to go up to between Rs1,50,000 – Rs2,00,000 per month. This translates to roughly Rs18,00,000 to 24,00,000 per annum; TEC is hoping to obtain commitments for a month worth of salary from each  friend and/or donor.

Adopt a Child:
This is a popular program that connects a sponsor, a deserving child and the school. We are currently sponsoring children from neighbouring school in Jakkur and in colleges like Nagarjuna College and NTTF. The school identifies deserving children, based on family background and monetary wellness. The sponsor supports the child by paying the annual fees; The sponsor may take the relationship further by supporting other needs of the child like extra-curricular activities, out- of-school tuition programs etc. We generally expect the donor to carry the child through college and financial self-sufficiency

Apart from this, other programs offered by TEC are:
  • Donate your time
  • Support infrastructure projects
  • Fund a school van / bus for increased membership
  • Provide internet access to the children of schools

Who can participate
Anybody who is interested in education as a means of giving back
Anybody who wants to ensure that every penny is utilized for the children; TEC is small and focused enough to ensure that; TEC concentrates on the children and in “depth” rather than “breadth”.
