Location: Madurai has been an entrepreneurial town filled with small and medium enterprises. The town is a shopping capital for all the villages in the surrounding district.
People: The plight of all the daily wage workers in all these shops is beyond comprehension now. The entire network of load lifters, shop attendants, cleaners, drivers, home-based job-work providers, tailors, small producers, street-side shop vendors, and their entire ecosystem is highly stressed.
Problem: Most daily wagers in Madurai live in clusters of thickly populated neighborhood, most lacking basic amenities. With rents to pay, dues to cover for their autos/machines, interests to pay for the small loans taken from loan sharks, and the forthcoming academic year for children are all a big Pandora box of problems. The plight of single mothers, disabled people, terminally ill, parents of special children is even worse. They have no answers to the forthcoming problems as the current problem is only about getting sufficient food from somewhere to feed their families.
Phase1:
Solution: Over the last 30 years, we have deep connections with the most vulnerable communities in Madurai. We have identified 1000 families in need of rice and grocery support for the next month at least. This basic food ingredients package will help them nourish their families and keep their food worries away.
Support:
INR 500 will help a family of four with groceries for 15 days
INR 1000 will help a family of four with rice and groceries for 15 days
INR 2500 will help a family of four with rice, groceries and household cleaning essentials for 30 days
INR 5000 will help a family of four with rice and groceries for 30 days and help them overcome their house-rent worries for a month
Phase 2:
In the next phase, they will need economic protection to meet out their unexpected health, education, and other family expenses. We will work with these 1000 families, understand their needs, and render them economic support post the lock-down.
Phase 3:
PEAL's family support program will be implemented to address the varied needs of the members of any vulnerable families. Example: Children with special needs will be given professional support. Youngsters needing skill development will be grouped and connected to the right resources. Women with no income will be enabled with appropriate livelihood options.
