Till March 2020, he was cycling 100 Kms daily. In May 2020, his weight started falling and he was subsequently diagnosed with Colon Cancer. This was after his previous battle with Cancer in childhood, which had caused him one of his legs.
During the same time, due to COVID19 restrictions, Raju's dental practice was discontinued. Until now, Raju had funded his own education to become a doctor, study screenwriting, do his MA in English Literature while making the ends meet in Mumbai and would also contribute to his needful farming family whenever the crop was ruined due to lack of water or untimely rainfall. In the Sher-E-Punjab area of Andheri East, Raju Turkane is known as a jolly and kindhearted dentist who would treat patients from impoverished backgrounds at a minimal cost, and at times, without even charging a penny.
Suddenly, this self-made self-reliant man who has touched so many lives in a positive way, had no means left to support himself. And he had to arrange INR 1.5 Lakh Rupees for his treatment. With help of his friends from the writing community, he could continue his treatment.
Till now, Raju has completed 14 sessions of Chemotherapy at Nagpur’s government hospital and has responded really well to the treatment. He is currently being treated at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai and is in the last leg of his treatment. The doctors have suggested Radiation Therapy for now which would cost him around INR 2 Lakh. We are trying to raise funds for the same in the next one month.
We will be thankful to each one of our friends who contribute to help Raju. The amount need not be big. We think that if many of us contribute in smaller amounts we would be able to raise a significant amount – Let’s build the wall brick by brick!
