Lalitha Chandana Foundation was founded in memory of Lalitha and Chandana, the mother and the daughter, who fought cancer with courage and conviction till they lost their lives to the ruthless disease in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Lalitha was an anthropologist by training and profession and worked tirelessly on women's issues and gender equality. She strongly believed that the under-served population and the local organizations are highly capable and that their resilience is deep routed. Chandana, who unfortunately played both the roles of a care provider to her mom and a patient right after her mom passed away, believed that learning about early diagnosis and empathetic support to the family at the time of shock and anxiety when diagnosed with cancer is fundamental in dealing with cancer. Embracing the mother's principles and the daughter's ideas as our very own we, family and friends, registered LCF in Dec 2014 with a mission statement to "nurture a sense of comfort among the people diagnosed with cancer by educating on treatment protocol and available services, sponsor cancer treatments, and spread awareness for early diagnosis.”

We started with need-based treatment support in 2015 and found a strong partner in the Institute of Rural Health Studies (IRHS) that runs comprehensive care and support to people fighting cancer with services for early screening and diagnosis, counselling, and treatment. IRHS leverages LCF grants towards (1) building awareness on breast cancer, cervical cancer, and oral cancer in villages, (2) spreading awareness to government hospital staff on the actual protocol of treatment, (3) screening of cases at an average of 100 women per week and conducting biopsies (i.e.5% of the cases) at the local hospitals. In addition to working with IRHS, LCF continues to support individual cases collaborating with other local organizations.

Driven by our work so far we want to continue as well as expand into taking a more active role in supporting individual cases. We seek your help in doing so. For 2020 we set a goal to raise 200K INR in funds to support our cause from May 15, 2020 (marks the anniversary of Chandana passing away) and hope to reach the target by Jun 30, 2020.
