Story

Background
1.  My village (Sharote)  is a cluster of three sub villages spread over an entire spur jetting out of Devi Dhar and is situated 20km away from sub-district headquarter Thathri and 35km away from district headquarter Doda. The location being mountainous and  remote is still unknown to many. Agriculture is the main profession of villagers. The people back there are yet waiting for any nature of development to take place. Education, Water, Road Connectivity and Electricity are the main concerns of this village. Scope of development is diverse and wide, however, I have identified only two issues first to start with-
  (a)  Fetching water from the nearest     source. Identified source is approximately 700m away. For executing this part, minimum two heavy duty water pumps are an inescapable requirement alongwith piping system.
  (b)  Planting trees. We may need minimum of 20,000 trees that are to be planted on either side of the river and at the Identified stretches of barren and eroding land. The selection of trees would be mix (both shady and fruit bearing) as to support the wild animals also.

Concept
2.  Due to depleted number of trees, the overall environment of the village is not in a good condition. Draught has been a pressing issue hitting hard at the agrarian.

3.  Various stages of the project:-
(a)   Mapping of the green zones where trees existed earlier.
(b)   Identification of water source to fetch water from.
(c)   Establishing water channels to support the new plantation.
(d)   Undertaking plantation drives with the support of local populace and earmarking people accountable for given number of trees.

4.  Budget:  I'm  aiming to generate up to Rs.5,00,000/- for my village, with which I'll be able to plant 20,000 saplings (15000 for  three sub villages and 5000 for either side of river bed; each plant would cost somewhere between 40 to 50 rupees) and buy heavy duty water pumps (two, each costing Rs 1,31,000) along with piping system. I will be able to bear the extra cost of transportation, manure, earthworks and misc  items from my own. The manpower is expected through the village community, school children, volunteers etc.

5.  Advantages Accrued:
(a)   Plantation/afforestration would relieve villagers of the problems of soil erosion, land slides and retention of water table alongwith  improved environment.
(b)   Getting water to the dried part of the hilly region would assist the populace in continuing with the agriculture practice.
