Every morning, as India is told to isolate, hundreds of waste collectors in Hyderabad must leave their homes to collect waste from homes, shops and hospitals. They are “self-employed” workers, working without protective gear, handling dirty, toxic and even medical waste with their bare hands. Covid has dried up other sources of work and family members have lost their jobs in domestic work, construction work, etc., With the families’ incomes dropping down to less than 50%, they now face even further destitution. The pandemic has ravaged these communities with almost every household dealing with sickness, hunger and death.
How can you help?
For 12 years, Montfort Social Institute has worked directly with the waste collector families who live in Hyderabad’s slums. Covid’s apocalyptic second wave has wrought devastation on these communities. We at MSI are launching a fundraising campaign to help them survive the crisis. Money raised will be used to buy essential kits to meet the basic needs of the 466 families living in four slums.
Each essential kit will contain:
1. A set of dry rations including basic grains and other essential food items.
2. A hygiene kit including soap, detergent, sanitary products, and protective masks and gloves.
3. A set of basic medicines symptom relief medication and immunity boosters e.g. paracetamol, vitamins.
We would like to provide this support at least for three consecutive months. This kit can truly be the difference between life and death.
