Rotary Club of Chennai Riviera seeks to raise funds as a means of implementation and community development for the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Polio eradication.
Rotary Club of Chennai Riviera dedicates their services and energy to achieving development targets by focusing on building skills. Rotary Club of Chennai Riviera facilitates knowledge sharing and transfer, while leveraging local expertise to achieve these SDGs.
PROJECT 1: PROJECT ROZGAR – WASTE NOT WANT NOT
At the Rotary Club of Chennai Riviera, we plan to collect and use surplus fabric from garment factories and households, to make bags and shoes instead of adding to the already overflowing landfills. These scraps will be upcycled by women, who come from economically backward areas & weaker sections of the societies.
The fashion industry is a highly polluting sector. Many consumers are unaware that a large chunk of their wardrobe is essentially plastic. Washing billions of garments every year has a devastating impact on our oceans. The concept of “fast fashion” has encouraged consumers to buy and quickly dispose of their clothes. This project is developed with a focus to attain SDG 5, SDG 8, SDG 12 and SDG 13 (Sustainable Development Goals). Clothing production accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions. Recycling 2 million tons of clothing per year is equivalent to taking 1 million cars off the street. On average, we dispose of about 81 pounds of clothes a year but most people don't realise that they can be upcycled. We can make a huge difference by upcycling.
Through your donation, this project will help enhance vocational skills and knowledge among women and adolescent girls, coming from economically backward areas and other weaker sections of the society. Additionally, it will improve their entrepreneurship and employment skills, thereby empowering them to make decisions about themselves & make them self-reliant. We aim to address more than just waste – the high carbon footprint of textiles means that we can also reduce the carbon footprint of bags and shoes by over 90% while providing sustainable income to these women.
Rotary Club of Chennai Riviera will establish a Vocational center for tailoring training. The project aims to train 60 women in batches in 3 months. Join us in this initiative to help empower these women while we take care of the environment and tackle climate change. Your donation can make a difference.
PROJECT 2: POLIO ENDGAME
Over the years, Rotary International has been incessantly focusing on eradicating polio as it has proven to be a concern for the best of nations. Polio is a highly contagious crippling disease that has been eliminated from most countries around the world. Ever since the fight against polio started, we’ve reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9 percent and reached more than 2.5 billion children with the vaccine. There are fewer polio cases today than ever before, but the dream is to observe complete eradication. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever. If polio is not eradicated, hundreds of thousands of children could be paralyzed. Global health care costs would rise dramatically, and many children’s quality of life would be drastically diminished. It is life-threatening to all the children across the world and the gruesome impact of this disease can be stopped by you.
Your donation helps Rotary and its partners reach every child with the polio vaccine. Half of the funds raised in this initiative will completely go towards this cause and the smile of every healthy child lies in your hands. Join us in the fight to end polio and help us save lives and give a child a chance at a prosperous future.
About Rotary Club of Chennai Riviera:
We are a dedicated group of people who share a common passion to bring positive changes to the community and the world. We have concentrated our efforts heavily in the avenues with a focus that corresponds to 5 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals because we believe the needs of the present should not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
In order to achieve sustainability we must balance three factors equally - the economic, social, and the environmental factors . Hence we aim to collaborate with institutions to create sustainable development programs that would help create decent work and economic growth, focus on quality education and gender equality and educate consumers on responsible consumption and tackling climate change.
As a club we have concentrated our efforts heavily in the avenues with a focus that corresponds to 5 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals because we believe the needs of the present should not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality is a prerequisite human right
SDG 8 – Sustainable Growth and Employment for all
SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption for Better Tomorrow
