Help sustain childcare and tuition centres in urban poor areas

The Centre for Labour Education and Development (CLEAD) has been working towards the protection of women workers and the elimination of child labor since 1991. It operates childcare, rehabilitation and after-school tuition centers for child laborers and school dropouts, conducts skills training for women and young girls whose parents are released bonded laborers, and organizes regular medical camps for families of unorganized workers across Tamil Nadu. CLEAD has been active in Tamil Nadu for 27 years now, relying primarily on individual donations from friends of the organization. Since we could use some help sustaining our childcare and tuition centers every year, we thought we would ask for help.

Currently, CLEAD operates childcare centers in two low-income neighborhoods in Chennai - Triplicane and Sathya Nagar C. About 20 children regularly attend these centers on weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm, where they receive preschool education and nutritious meals. In addition to the costs of cooking for the children and maintenance of the facilities, one teacher and two ayahs are also employed from the neighborhood to be engaged in childcare and education and are paid nominal salaries of Rs. 5000 and Rs. 2500 a month for their services.
We run two after-school tuition centers: one for children of waste pickers in the Kodungaiyur dump about 40 of whom turn up regularly for classes, and another in a low-income area in Kilpauk, where 20 children attend. CLEAD pays nominal salaries of Rs. 2000 per month for three and one college-educated teacher-coordinators in these locations respectively, in addition to undertaking rent and electricity expenses.
Our target for this round of fundraising is Rs. 1,80,000, to manage our expenses across these centers for four months. (If we cross this target, we will be sustained for longer!) But even a little from you goes a long way in helping children of unorganized workers be taken care of while their parents go to work (and encourage the mothers to go to work), eat nutritiously, learn the basics and get used to going to school until they are old enough to! Many children can also really use support to keep up in school – we have noticed a great demand for tuition classes in the neighbourhoods we work in, and want to keep up these services. Please consider donating to our causes!

All donations are exempt under Sec 80G of Income Tax Act (80G DIT(E)No.2(532)12-13). Receipts from the organization will reach you within 60 days from the time of donation.
