Hello,
My name is Birju Mody and I have been diagnosed with a rare of the rarest Cancer called " Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma Metastasis". Of those thyroid cancer diagnoses, 2% to 3% are medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
These cancer cells traveled from my thyroid glands to my spine fracturing my L1 and L5 vertebra and have spread into my body now. There are lesions on the Liver and in the 10th Rib and can spread further.
I got operated on 29th January for thyroid cancer and then on 5th March for my spine fusion so that radiation can be given after a few procedures.
My left leg has only 30 -35% of strength and needs continuous medication and physio.
Till now I have been on anti-cancer medicine called Cabozantinib 40mg but since my RET mutation test is positive, I have stopped this medicine and started Selpercatinib 40mg (life-saving drug) which is not manufactured in India and not even easily available. I have to take a lifetime or till the time cancer cells are not eliminated.
Selpercatinib 40mg is available in the USA which will cost me in India at approximately Rs.10L / Month as per the dosage recommended by doctors. Trying another alternate brand with the same molecule content will cost me approximately Rs.2.4L /Month.
My other average monthly expenses for MRI, CT scan, PET Scan, Sono, ECG, X-ray, Reports, Consultation, and medicines are approximately Rs.1L / month.
In case I have to go for radiation again, it will cost me between Rs.2.5L to 3L depending on the number of sessions.
So, My total average medical expense per month is 3.5L to 4..
My yearly expense of Selpertanibin 40mg will be approx 25L.
After 1 year there are pharma companies in India who are planning to launch the same medicine; don’t know the cost of the same.
