After multiple tests and visits to numerous clinics & hospitals in Manipur, I was diagnosed with a high level of creatinine (4.5) in May 2017. And was later confirmed with a CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) – Stage 4. Throughout 2017 and most part of 2018, I had my worst journey with swellings all over my limbs & face. To control this, I was under a lot of medications and had undergone dialysis on a regular basis.
My situation was not improving and Manipur’s medical system were not properly equipped with complex kidney problems, I decided to come to New Delhi for my treatment in February 2019. Even though, I knew that the expenditure would be very expensive but with the support of my parents, we managed to raise some money by selling a plot of land which was in my parent’s name. So, in November 2019, I got my kidney replaced successfully at QRG Health City Hospital, Faridabad. I was lucky enough to have my elder brother (Usham Benson) as the donor for the procedure. I remained in Delhi-NCR till early 2020 and up till this time, I and my family have already spent more than 20 lakhs.
The struggle with my health continued even after my kidney transplant, when I went back to Manipur and was diagnosed with COVID-19. I was kept under quarantine in a JNIMS (a govt hospital in Manipur) for almost 3 weeks, according to state protocols. It was during this time that, my health turned for the worst, due to the same unresponsive medical system & unprofessional behavior of the doctors & health workers. After wasting a lot of time in JNIMs & other hospitals in Manipur, I was again forced to come and seek treatment in QRG Health City Hospital, Faridabad on 3rd November 2020. After getting admitted, results showed my creatinine level at 5.4 and it was revealed that my body was rejecting the transplanted kidney.
I am at a loss of words now and feeling utterly helpless after what I & my family have undergone. Now my doctor at QRG hospital, Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Director, Nephrology Department, has suggested that I need another kidney transplant procedure. The procedure alone will cost around 8 lakhs. And pre & post-surgery care, medicine costs, hospital bills & accommodation will require another 3 to 4 lakhs each. Which comes close to about 20 to 25 lacs in total. Right now, I am staying in a rented accommodation in Saket, New Delhi waiting for a donor.
