Every morning, Sarwari and Haidar’s youngest child would wake up to her parents and siblings hovering over her, waiting for her to make the slightest movement. Even a small smile from her would be welcomed with a cheer as each of them would take turns to carry her. Their baby girl (1) was born with a defect in her food pipe and windpipe, but she still smiled in abundance.
“Now, she wakes up in the ICU all alone. When I go to see her and she’s awake, she looks at me and immediately tries to move her hands, begging me to carry her, but I can’t do anything but watch her helplessly. Her hands are bandaged so that she doesn’t try to remove the tubes on her body. She has a big scar from the surgery on her body. It’s very difficult to see her like this, but I know this is the only way she can get better.” – Sarwari, mother
She had to be fed through a tube from birth
Sarwari and Haidar’s little girl was born with tracheoesophageal fistula, an abnormal connection between the oesophagus (the tube that leads from the throat to the stomach) and the trachea (the tube that leads from the throat to the windpipe and lungs). When a baby with this defect swallows, the liquid passes through the abnormal connection and the liquid gets int the baby’s lungs.“We took her home, but she could only eat and drink with a feeding tube. She was growing well and once she gained enough weight, she underwent a surgery on 10 December. But due to severe infections, she was shifted to the ICU and placed on ventilator support. She’s been there ever since.” – Sarwari
They’re waiting to take her back home
Sarwari and Haidar want to name their baby Aliyah, and are waiting to take her back home, healthy. She had only recently started saying her first words and would say ammi and abbu when they carried her. Unfortunately, their baby needs continued ICU stay to recover completely, and the devastated parents have nothing left to continue her treatment.“I’m only a labourer in our hometown in Bihar. I don’t earn enough to sustain her treatment. I’ve already borrowed money and spent over 1 lakh on just her medicines. If we get the 2.5 lakhs needed, we can take our baby back home soon.” – Haidar, father
