    Baby of Akanksha

    from Sarita Vihar New Delhi

We have just one day left to save our baby, but I’m struggling to find a way. Our baby was born with what looked like a big painful boil on his lower back. Now, it’s an open wound. He has a hole in his lower back, and we can see his flesh. It’s a terrifying sight. What’s even more heartbreaking is watching him cry and not being able to even carry him to comfort him. As his parents, we can’t do anything to take away the pain, and the one thing that can save him is beyond what we can afford. Our baby is running out of time without surgery.” – Akanksha, the baby boy’s mother

Akanksha and Piyush’s 15-day-old baby boy needs a surgery in 24 hours to survive the severe spinal defect that he was born with. Without urgent surgery, the baby risks life-threatening infections, buildup of fluid in the brain or worse, death. Akanksha and Piyush are desperate to save their only child, but they’re helpless.

Their baby was born with a spinal defect and has been in excruciating pain ever since

Their 15-day-old baby was born with Meningomyelocele, a birth defect in which the baby’s spinal cord fails to develop properly. The spinal abnormalities can affect the baby’s brain, bladder and bowel function. Their baby’s spinal cord is now exposed and he’s vulnerable to severe, life-threatening infections. The little one has been in the NICU ever since birth, and even underwent a surgery when he was just 2-days-old.

“We’ve spent the last 15 days in the hospital. There are times when I even forget what day it is, our lives have come to a standstill. We found out about our baby’s spinal defect when I was in the seventh month of my pregnancy, but we didn’t know how serious it was until he was born. I held him in my arms for barely a few seconds before he was taken to the NICU. We were told that after the surgery, he would be completely fine. But our baby didn’t get better. He continued to cry in pain, and soon, his spine was exposed. We quickly rushed him from Bhopal to a hospital in Delhi where we finally found hope.
While Piyush and Akanksha have hope, they don't have the means to afford the life-saving surgery he needs.

His parents have exhausted everything they had - they will lose him without timely treatment

Akanksha recalls the day they found out they were going to have a baby. It’s one of the happiest days of her life, and everything they did from then on, was planned around the arrival of their baby. Akanksha had picked up clothes, blankets and toys for their little one, which now lay unused in their empty house in Bhopal. The new parents never thought that their baby would be in so much pain and agony and that without treatment, they might never get to take him home.

We’re trying to stay positive and keep giving each other courage to make it through the day. But we’re so close to the date of the surgery and we still don’t have the means to afford it. We’ve spent all our savings in the last 15 days. We’ve done everything we can to try and save our son, but we can’t go on without help.”

How You Can Help

Piyush and Akanksha have 24 hours to save their 15-day-old baby boy. The dangerous spinal defect he was born with is only making him weaker and more vulnerable to deadly infections, and the only thing that can save him is an urgent surgery. Piyush works for a private company and after spending everything on his treatment so far, doesn’t have the means to save their only child. Your support will give their baby boy the life-saving surgery and a healthy, happy childhood. They desperately need your help.
