Children who have adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions at school are more able to integrate hygiene education into their daily lives and can be effective messengers and agents for change in their families and the wider community. Conversely, communities in which schoolchildren are exposed to disease risk because of inadequate water supply, sanitation, and hygiene at school are themselves more at risk. Families bear the burden of their children’s illness due to bad conditions at school.
To address the above issue, we are trying to initiate a movement for clean drinking water and sanitation as a basic right for children at schools. As a first step, we plan to install water purifier systems and provide other sanitation requirements at BKV Nursery and Primary School, where more than 60% of the students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The school currently provides education to around 500 children, who will be positively impacted by the facilities. If successfully implemented, this would serve to motivate the sanitation facilities in other similar schools in the neighborhood.
