Hello and thank you! for taking out the time for visiting my fundraising page. My name is Atul Shendge, I live in Mumbai. I am a young queer and belong to a socially oppressed caste in Indian society & have been raised in a broken family. My life experiences have motivated me to pursue a career in public health. I have been working in the field of HIV/ AIDS, and sexual health since 2017 and currently working as a community counselor in the Global Fund-supported virtual HIV intervention project NETREACH. I have been volunteering as peer support for a group consisting of people living with HIV since 2017 providing care, support, and treatment.
From this exposure, I have understood the importance of evidence-based advocacy and policy framing while working in my fields.
As the first one to obtain a bachelor's in my family, education was always seen as a solution to solve any problem in life. I have always been motivated to study and have dreamed to be involved in policy-making and health advocacy and research. I was selected in the leadership program (learning to lead) of Akanksha based in Mumbai, which helped me gain more knowledge and grow as a person while developing various skills which I can execute in my work. Through these years, I have constantly worked to upgrade my knowledge from open-source materials where available, gained expertise by working as a volunteer in organizations like Impulse Mumbai and held various director positions there; I have found my niche in public health. I worked hard and scored an 80% in my bachelor's. I have made it a point to interact with people who have excelled through their education and consider that as a stepping stone to their success and they have all motivated me to continue my education.
Thus, I applied to various colleges in India for a master's and have qualified at TISS and O.P Jindal University.
O.P Jindal University is located in Haryana, India, and has offered me a 100% scholarship on tuition fees to pursue a Master's in Public Health.
However, the hostel fee is very expensive. My classes will commence on 1st September 2022. As I am the only earning member of my family, it is difficult for me to bear these costs as I do not have savings due to my family commitments.
Why do I want to go to this University?
OP Jindal offers a great prospectus for my growth in the field of Public Health as it is ranked the No. 1 Private University in India. It has amazing collaboration which increases my chances for placements and my prospects for Ph.D. also the fact that I have been chosen for a scholarship (tuition fees only) makes me want to believe that irrespective of where I was born and the circumstances that I was raised in do not dictate my scope in life.
I am raising money for my hostel fees.
How would I utilize the money generated?
Amount to be fundraised: Rs. 6,39,600 (Six lakhs thirty-nine thousand and six hundred)
Year 1:
1st Semester & 2nd Semester - Rs. 1,38,000 (per semester) x 2 = Rs. 2,76,000
Year 2:
3rd Semester & 4th Semester – Rs. 1,38,000 (per semester) x 2 = Rs. 2,76,000 + 10% increase = Rs. 3,03,600 (inclusive of 10% increase as per university guideline)
Total Hostel fees: Rs. 2,76,000 + Rs. 3,03,600 = Rs. 5,79,600
For the study of this course, I also need a laptop. I look forward to buying the one which would be up to Rs. 60,000.
The total amount I am looking to raise from the Milaap Fundraiser is: Rs. 6,39,600
