Little Asphak Needs Your Help in Battling Thalassemia
Mr. Aasif Jakhra has been running around for help for the last five month. He has been knocking on peoples' doors, strangers and friends, and pleading for help. All this because he needs to save his son Asphak’s life. Asphak suffers from beta thalassemia major and urgently requires a bone marrow transplant.
He has never known a life free of illness
Asphak is only 8.3 years old child. And almost all his life, he has been sick. Asphak was 20 months of age, when he started falling ill. Aasifbhai recollects, “He was constantly running a temperature and always had a cold.” The baby would also find it difficult to fall asleep. He would be up all night, crying, because he was always in a lot of pain, says Aasifbhai. His hair fell out and his skin turned pale.
Asphak’s worried parents rushed him to various doctors in their hometown of Jamnagar, in Gujarat. The doctors suspected that Asphak might be suffering from some form of blood disorder and told the parents that an operation might be required. They suggested taking the child to Ahmedabad in order to receive better medical treatment.
When Aasifbhai and his wife conveyed the doctors' suggestions to their family, the other members of the family immediately rejected the idea of taking Asphak to Ahemedabad, as they couldn't afford the expenses that would be involved. A desperate Aasifbhai and his wife then took Asphak to a hospital at their home town, where they administered a blood transfusion in the child. The doctors at the hospital told the parents to done thalassemia test of Asphak.
A devastating diagnosis
Once the parents brought Asphak Green Cross Laboratory, Ahmedabad a blood test was immediately conducted on the child. And within 10 days, the parents' worst fears were confirmed – Asphak had thalassemia major.
Aasifbhai pleaded with the doctors to do whatever it took to save his son's life. Asphak required a blood transfusion every fifteen days. And he has been undergoing transfusions every fifteen days for the last six and a half years. The transfusions have wiped out the family's finances, and Asifbhai has had to rely on the kindness and support of friends and strangers to gather funds.
A Doctor from Guru Gobindsingh Govt. Hospital, Jamnagar told the distraught parents that Asphak would require a bone marrow transplant as a permanent solution to his illness.
As per Doctor’s suggestion Asfikbhai has done HLA of Asphak with his younger brother Aadil. God listen their prayer and Asphak found to b a perfect match with his sibling. Whilst the donor was found but BMT cost is very high. CIMS, Ahmedabad gave estimate of Rs. 09 lacks for Aasphak’s BMT. But the procedure for the transplant could not be completed as there was a shortage of funds.
