It was a perfect summer evening of May 4th, 2020 and I was at my sister’s house having a fun conversation as well as watching my two sons enjoy, play and dance together. If only we thought about the worst that could ever happen, maybe the situation would be different now. While I was chatting with my sister, my younger son Aarush, while dancing with his elder brother unknowingly lost his balance and fell on the ground. Before we could go and save him, he hit his head to the floor and had to be taken to the hospital immediately since his head had swollen completely.
After visiting the doctor, Aarush was prescribed some medicines and ointments for his swelling. 20 days passed by, yet no difference or betterment in the treatment was noticeable whatsoever. Worried about his health, we took him to another hospital this time. To our surprise, Aarush had to undergo several blood tests including a bone marrow autopsy and biopsy. I almost lost myself wondering why my son went through this when it was only a mere fall.
The answer to my worried thoughts shook me completely. Aarush apparently was diagnosed with a disease we never knew even existed. According to the doctors, Aarush was suffering from bone marrow failure due to congenital amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia which is a rare blood disorder and a type of bone marrow failure, which if not treated well can turn fatal.
The doctor’s word brought my world to a standstill. I could not figure out what to do and how to bring back my suffering son to his happy, cheerful life. We did not delay in commencing Aarush’s treatments after hearing this awful news. For 2 months, he underwent blood and blood product transfusions six times, along with his ongoing medications. Days and months passed by, yet his health only kept deteriorating. Aarush developed red patches and scratches all over his body and his gums began bleeding quite often. On further enquiry, we were told by the doctor that only a bone marrow transplant could help in saving Aarush from losing his life.
This news brought back a sigh of relief which was away from our heart and mind since this accident happened. All four of us were relieved to know that Aarush will now get better and come back home. But when we got this solution of bringing back Aarush to life, our world shattered again with the information given by the doctor regarding the hefty cost of a huge amount of INR 15,00,000. Being a low middle-class family, it is difficult for us to afford such a difficult and huge amount.
My husband works as a clerk and is a sole earner in the family. His income, the loans we took, the valuables we sold could only suffice Aarush’s treatment. However, for his bone marrow transplant, we urgently require 15,00,000 to bring my playful child back to life. It shatters me to see my happy, smiling son suffer so much every day. We did our best to save him as much as we could, but now we are a complete dead-end. I plead everyone reading this to donate whatever amount you can to help us save our child. It is only with your help that we will be able to save my dying son and give him the life he used to have before encountering this dreading illness.
