    Kubernagar English School Number 4

    from Ahmedabad, Gujarat

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” -Vincent Van Gogh. Today, it is the time for you, to transform the lives of our children by contributing your share to it.

Dear Kindheart,

I am Anuja Gurele, a TFI fellow placed in Kubernagar English School Number 4. Out of 176 students of the school, I cater to 68 wonderful children from class 5,6, 7and 8 who belong to a very disadvantaged community. These students belong to the Kubernagar region of Ahmedabad which is a bootlegger community and hence, do not have much financial support or parent investments in terms of education. The only support they have is from the school where they study, the government teachers of their school, and the TFI fellows who work with them on a daily basis.

Pandemic has been a really difficult phase for the students and the community they belong to. Many of the parents lost their jobs and there was a crisis in terms of attaining basic ration for the families. With the support of many voluntary donations we are able to provide food relief to the students and their families but also we were able to gather second-hand devices through which 50% of our students are connected for virtual learning. We are consistently trying our best to connect with 100% of them by providing them with shared second-hand smartphones to access online education.

Although we are able to reach most of them virtually, we sincerely hope that next year we will be able to connect with them in the physical classroom to provide adequate educational and emotional support for 100% of our students. With this hope, we need to prepare our school in such a manner that could accommodate students in the new reality of social distancing and safety.

Unfortunately, our school has not remained the same. Due to the lockdown, our priorities changed from school maintenance to catering to the basic necessities of the students and their parents. Hence, we transferred our financial capacity to that. This resulted in a lack of maintenance of the school building, leading to the collapse of the school wall due to heavy rainfall. Our school is in dilapidated conditions. The windows are cracked, the bricks from the roof are falling off. It is not a conducive space for our students.

Although, we are not very positive that the schools will reopen this year yet we want to be prepared for whenever the school reopens next yearWe want to make sure when our students come back to their classrooms, they will feel secure, lively, and comfortable.

We aim to do so by doing the following things:
  1. Repairing the dilapidated walls and the furniture of the school.
  2. Sanitization of the entire school.
  3. Buying more benches so students can sit in individual spaces while maintaining social distance.
  4. Buying books and 2- second-hand computer for our school.
50% of the money will be spent on admissions of our 18 students in private schools for their further education. Our grade 8 students will have to move to a private school (In Gujarat, govt. schools only operate till grade 8 in English medium). The fees of an individual student in a private school is approximately Rs. 6,750/yr. Due to lockdown, many of the students and their parents do not have money for their admissions in private school, hence to ensure their learning, the students will be provided with sponsorship (partly or fully depending on the case) for their admission in the new school.

As a fellow working in a school of a disadvantaged community, I humbly request you to make the donation as per your capacity. Please get in touch, if you want to know more about the school or our students.

Your donation could help our students in attaining quality education in a safe environment.

The beneficiary of the donations will be the school and the students. It will be moderated by the Teach for India Fellow.
