"Mewat is destined for damnation and will always remain underdeveloped."
"Nothing can happen here...This place cannot change."
"Nothing can happen here...This place cannot change."
These are the sentences that I grew up listening to from other people and still continue to hear them...
All over the years of my work as a development professional, I have realized the problems of a marginalized community cannot be seen in isolation. A child who is not able to come to school is either malnourished, sick, is engaged in some livelihood activities or is working as a daily wage labourer. Everything is interconnected. Livelihood, education and health are interconnected and the absence of one can impact the quality of life. A multisectoral approach needs to be adopted to create self-sustainable, autonomous and regenerative communities.
I along with my colleagues are working with an integrated development approach in Mewat to improve the revenue of households, increase learning outcome in the school and enhance the quality of health care facilities in the community. A total of about 600 students and 3000 community members will be impacted with our intervention.
Following will be domains of our focus where we will be using the donated money -
- Life and Employability Skills and Livelihood
We are working on providing life skills and employability skills in collaboration with our partners. Our sessions will prepare the youth in the age group of 16 to 30 for entrepreneurial ventures and career opportunities. In collaboration with our partner we will provide placements along with career guidance and mentorship. Our team will also work on finding revenue streams from existing avenues in the community like handicrafts, agri-products, fishery, etc. by providing direct market links for higher returns.
- Whole School Transformation with a Library setup
We work on whole school transformation in collaboration with teachers along with an immersive parent engagement strategy, eventually leading to an active School Management Committee (SMC). We introduce new modern pedagogy and motivate the teachers to use them as well. We use digital and non-digital tool to enhance learning outcomes and learning in school more fun filled, thereby preparing them for higher grades and for real life scenarios. We will also set up a modern library for the community which will have the literature related to Mewat with grade-appropriate texts. The library will have a digital set up for the distribution of books through online and offline platforms.
- Quality Health Accessibility
Our team will also focus on activating PHCs and make quality health facilities accessible to community members. We want to shift the narrative from curative to preventive approach and focus the conversation to focus on health as wealth or asset. Our team will promote hygienic practices in the community and inculcate proper sanitation practices at school and at home. We will also work to connect government schemes with the people for seamless implementation.
I am calling you all to support me in this endeavour...No contribution is less for changing the scenario in Mewat. If 10 lakh people donate even Re. 1, we will be able to create an impact.
I do not want to hear anymore that Mewat is underdeveloped. I want to change this narrative...
