Recently I got selected for Jagriti Yatra 2019 -Jagriti Yatra is a 15-day long, national train journey that will take me 8000 kilometres across the length and breadth of India, to understand and build the India of smaller towns and villages through enterprise. http://www.jagritiyatra.com/about
I will meet role models, change-makers, leaders that started out on a journey just like me – and made a difference to thousands of lives. I will get to meet like-minded young leaders- my co-Yatris and complete strangers.
Being among those 450 people selected from 20,000 applicants from all over the world, Jagriti Yatra has given me a chance to understand real India deeply and be the future the country expects, but the only hurdle in my way is the fee of INR 71,000 + 1000= 72,000
During my learning stage I never faced any challenges that would stop me to learn more and more. I got scholarships for both my Graduation and Post Graduation and got placed and worked for 1 year at Godrej Consumer Products Limited, before joining Edumust. I always had this interest in serving my nation by any means- by being a good citizen, join defence services or volunteering for social causes. I tried for Indian Army 8 times also, but I believe I am meant for something else. During University time, I have represented at National and International level in Folk Dances and Folk Orchestra. This was the time when I volunteered for Edumust. I have been volunteering at Edumust since 2015. I was taking care of summer camps and then started finding interest in the programmes that Edumust was running. I realised there is a strong need to understand and go for a deep research for a better education system.
My professional interest is in providing the digital literacy and promoting the same. I found myself aligned with Edumust’s this programme. I remember my time when I was given access to computer in class 2 and I ruined it many times but it was repaired by my parents and they encouraged me to use it. I think they encouraged me explore more because they never got a chance to do it themselves. Now, my parents are dependent on me while using computers or using any digital medium like smart phones or even LED televisions with multiple functions. I developed few skills with time that differentiated me from others and helped me to explore more opportunities. I never felt nervous or timid like few feel uncomfortable and lack confidence in this digital era. I have seen my batch mates at university during placements, few colleagues during job and the people working under me struggling with the use of basic computers.
With a digital learning program at this early phase will develop a curiosity among the students to explore it more and more. When I was a school student and then a university student, I have seen a difference between me and my batch mates in terms of using the computer or any other digital platform. In this digital era, everyone needs to be digitally literate. Since this helped me to increase my opportunities, I feel it can help others also. I have been volunteering for Edumust, working with Government Primary Schools, during my university days and I felt that if we open the gates between the digital era and these kids at this formative stage, no one can stop them to increase their opportunities also. While working with computers, digital machine or giving presentation at college few feel nervous and timid, with the knowledge fed in the fresh hard disks of these kids now, no one can stop them from becoming confidently different. The overall objective is to bring the kids up to speed with new age digital skills and help them use those skills to improve their educational and livelihood opportunities. With this knowledge they will not be dependent on someone else for day to day work on and with digital machines and will use these for their livelihood. I believe when the wall between this learning and the students is broken they will end up with more opportunities and creative thinking and confidence to face anyone. After acquiring this skill that their parents were devoid of will make their parents feel proud that their kid is not ending up into a job, i.e., casual labor workforce. After done with the “learn to use a computer” stage the kids move to the “us the computers to learn” stage. I want the kids in the 5th standard to confidently deliver their presentations using computer or any digital medium. I have seen the kids working on computers after quickly finishing their food during recess time, because they are curious to learn it since they are devoid of using it after school. During recess 5th standard students also teach the 6th, 7th and 8th standards kids who peek into the room where the computers are placed (in the schools where building is common). The superior feeling that the primary school kids are having when they show their learning to 6, 7 & 8th grade is unimaginable. The kids who are going to 6th standards are continuously asking us to start the shut computers 6th standard onwards. I believe the student in 1st standard now will end up equipped with all the knowledge of using the computers to learn by the time it reaches the 5th standard.
Today if I feel myself confident while presenting using technology, I want to see these Government Primary School kids from rural areas doing the same at an early stage. As I was never discouraged to do work on computers even if I ruined it many times, I will be there for these kids to again and again get the machines repaired if they ruin it. Since the schools we have adopted are less now, it is easy for me to get the machines repaired. During quality scaling up there is a need to develop a model and a team that will encourage the kids. I will be there to make sure that no student was devoid of this facility at this stage. If this has helped me, it will surely help others to differentiate and increase opportunities.
With Jagriti Yatra exposure i will surely expand the work I am doing right now and help the kids in need.
I request your support to help me win a chance to learn and unlearn from the Jagriti Yatra, to open my mind and learn from the personalities I meet along the way, to look for people to work with, and learn about the problems faced by the people of India, and to solve them.
I will share photos and videos regularly so that you can experience the journey through my eyes.
