Tulir Charitable Trust is a non profit, non governmental organization, (registered under the Indian Trusts Act) whose main focus is working against child sexual abuse under the auspices of Tulir - Centre for the Prevention and Healing of Child Sexual Abuse (www.tulir.org).
Considering primary prevention has now been established as the most effective strategy of addressing sexual violence against children - by reducing risks and vulnerabilities of children to victimization via programmes for social and economic empowerment, Tulir is assisting the Corporation of Chennai (which manages over 200 schools and 80000 students) with ensuring the Standard 10 students are provided the inputs and resources to be able to confidently complete their impending Board exams which was earlier scheduled for April 2020.
Most of the children who attend Schools managed by the Corporation are from socio - economically disadvantaged backgrounds, sometimes with the child being a first generation student. They are very dependent on school and teacher contact since the home situation, despite being aspirational for the child, is not very congenial to studying because of inability to provide academic inputs, housing challenges, and in the prevailing difficult times, due to COVID-19, just sheer food security.
To alleviate their anxiety as well as to ensure these 6000 Standard 10 children are not at a further disadvantage when preparing for their Board exams, the Corporation of Chennai has started online tutorials for them. A rapid survey showed nearly three quarters of their families possessed a smart phone and were pleased that their child would then be able to access the tutorials, thereby boosting their confidence, morale and preparedness .
However the current situation makes it very difficult for these 3000 families to dip into their meagre resources to additionally top up any of their current data plans which will enable their children to access the tutorials.
Tulir has undertaken to address this urgent situation by topping up the prevailing data plans with a further 84- 90 day plan. We have been provided the list of students, (which may increase as more information is available; the next step would also be to source phones for the remaining children) with other details necessary to recharge. The average cost per plan across the service providers is Rs 550 for a 84-90 day plan.
We hope you will be able to contribute towards this initiative ( and encourage others as well) of providing these children with the wherewithal to surmount the challenges and not be at a disadvantage which would curtail their future plans.
