    AKULA SOMNATH

    from BANJARA HILLS , HYDERABAD

"A few weeks ago, just as he was about to go to school, my son's hands and legs suddenly started trembling. Soon, he was shaking violently and he immediately collapsed on the floor. I was shocked and did not understand what was happening to him. The sight of him lying on the floor with uncontrollable seizures was so terrifying that I started screaming. In that moment, I thought we would lose our son. My husband and I quickly rushed him to the hospital, and he was immediately taken to the ICU. But, he is still not out of danger.” - Shoba, Somnath's mother.

In just a few days, this 9-year-old's happy childhood was stolen by this fatal disease

A month ago, Somnath suffered severe throat infection and vomiting. After two long weeks of frequent hospital admissions and regular medication, he was finally able to get rid of the infection. Somanth was happy to be discharged from the hospital and resume his normal life. But unfortunately, the very next day he nearly met death, His hands and legs shook violently and he was left extremely breathless, fighting for life. When his parents took him to the hospital, they were told that his nerves were paralyzed.

“When the doctors told us about his critical condition, we couldn’t believe what we were hearing. My son was a very active. The first thing he would do when he got home was play the dogs in the neighbourhood. He would feed them biscuits and run around with them. He's so considerate and caring. My heart broke when I realized that he is fighting death. He's been in the ICU for the past 11 days, completely bedridded, unable to move his hands and legs.” - Shoba.

Paralyzed nerves have left him helpless and motionless, only continued treatment can save him

9-year-old Somanth is suffering from polyneuropathy, a condition where peripheral nerves (nerves that run throughout your body) are paralyzed. Due to which Somnath developed weakness of muscles around his chest and throat, causing breathing problems. He cannot breathe on his own and requires ventilator support. The only he can recover is if he stays in the ICU for 10 days. He also needs a tracheostomy surgery, an opening created in the neck so a tube can be inserted into the windpipe to help him breathe.

“Every minute feels like an hour when I wait outside ICU to have a glimpse of my son. Each time I visit him, I prepare myself to smile and stay calm. But all my attempts fail when I see him motionless on the bed. I try to control my tears when he asks me to move his leg or hand with his pleading eyes. He has become weak and cries inconsolably. The doctors have said hat he can recover completely with ICU stay but we are unable to afford it. I cannot bear to think that I'll lose him, he is my world and I cannot live without him.” - Shoba.

After losing all their crops to no rain, this farmer couple has nothing left to save their son

Ramesh was a school teacher at a private school in Suryapet, Telangana, but he was forced to leave his passionate work as his minimal salary was not sufficient to feed his family. Ramesh and Shoba together started farming a year ago in their hometown. Unfortunately, they not only lost the crop this year because of less rainfall but also their investments and profits. They have spent all their savings and borrowed money from their relatives for their son's treatment. After spending 3 lakhs already, they desperate parents are left emptyhanded and can't afford the 5 lakhs needed for his life-saving treatment.

How You Can Help

Somanth is suffering from polyneuropathy, a condition where nerves that run throughout your body are paralyzed. This has led to weakness of muscles around his chest and throat, causing breathing problems. He urgently needs ICU admission for 10 days and tracheostomy surgery to breathe properly, without which Somanth will not survive. His parents are farmers who lost their crops this year and cannot save their son without your help.
