On an average a woman menstruates 3000 times in a lifetime yet according to a UNICEF report on menstruation 71% of Indian girls remained unaware of menstruation till their first period and thousands of women in low income communities such as but not limited to slums, tribal areas, and homeless shelters lack access to menstrual hygiene education and products. The Period Society is a youth founded initiative which seeks to achieve its goals of ending the menstrual taboo, educating women about menstruation, and providing access to menstrual hygiene products in low income communities in India guided by its pillars of conversation, education, and accessibility. Out region of focus is Mumbai, and we plan to reach out to these groups and break the stigma surrounding periods by initiating our drive - Samaan (a Hindi word meaning equal) to be held in Mumbai in August 2019.
The Period Society is proud to announce its collaboration with ENACTUS , a social enterprise at H.R. college which is driven by its principles of making Social, Economic, and Environmental Impact. On that note we’re holding a fundraiser to purchase their eco friendly Inaayat kits which meet a woman’s menstrual hygiene needs for 3 years while protecting the environment since these products are completely biodegradable! We will be donating these kits at different locations including tribal areas and organizations working with low income women.
Your contribution, regardless of the amount, can provide a woman with dignity and enable a girl to attend school due to reduced absenteeism and feelings of shame while improving standard of health and living in low income communities. Even a contribution of 280 rupees ( about 4 dollars) can enable a woman to live a more healthy, happy, and productive life for the next 3 years, so please show your support for this cause!
