Aditi R Thakur, now 14 years, was diagnosed with Beta-Thalassemia Major when she was just one year old.

Beta Thalassemia major is a genetic blood disorder where the patient’s body cannot produce their own hemoglobin or red blood cells and hence require regular blood transfusions once in 3 weeks.

Aditi has been undergoing this process known as Thalassemia management for the last 13 years. Unfortunately, frequent blood transfusions result in Iron Overload. Getting this Iron load eliminated is known as Iron chelation and requires the insertion of a syringe which is connected to a medical thal pump that administers the Iron Chelation medicine into her body into her abdomen for 7-8 hours, 4-5 times a week. These iron chelator medicines are very expensive with monthly medical costs ranging from Rs.13000-15000 per month.

For Aditi's lower-middle-class working family based in Bengaluru, these ongoing costs have been quite a challenge. But now, due to the ongoing pandemic, the family has been unable to meet these medical expenses for the past 15 months.
