Farmer Has Just A Few Days To Save His 7-Year-Old From A Blood Disease

Lack of rain, heavy debts, failed crops and an increasing number of suicides – the Indian farmer faces numerous obstacles. Prakash is one among them. From a small village near Marathwada, he has struggled all his life to provide his family with the basic necessities. 2018 was one of the most difficult years for Prakash. His village had no rainfall, his crops failed and farmers in and around his village were committing suicide at an alarming rate. But nothing hit him harder than his son’s diagnosis. Abhishek has a severe blood disease and needs a bone marrow transplant in 5 days. Prakash has no means to save him.

He has only 5 days left to get a transplant

Three months ago, when Prakash was working on his farm in the blistering heat, he got a phone call from Abhishek’s (7) school, asking him to pick him up. Asha and he rushed to his school. They saw that Abhishek was pale and weak. He could barely sit up, and his temperature was high. Tests revealed that his platelet counts were very low.

“We thought it was nothing serious because he was completely fine in the morning. Abhishek has always been active and agile. Even that morning, he was the first to get ready at home and was so happy leaving for school. It all happened so suddenly. When I saw him like that in school, I was taken aback. The doctors then asked us to take him to Mumbai.” – Prakash, father

In Mumbai, Abhishek was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, a rare condition in which the body stops producing new blood cells. They had never heard of the disease, but his treatment had to start immediately. He has been undergoing blood transfusions for more than two months now, but the doctors say it’s not enough to keep him alive. He needs a bone marrow transplant and he has only 5 days left to get it.

Prakash has been lying to his son for months now – he feels guilty and heartbroken

Fortunately, Abhishek’s older sister is a matched donor. But Prakash and Asha can’t afford the bone marrow transplant on Rs. 200 per day. They have already spent nearly Rs. 50,000 on his treatment so far. Abhishek is in the hospital in Mumbai now, waiting for the day he is cured of this ‘infection’. For three months now, Prakash has had to lie to him.

“He keeps asking me when we’re going back home, and I would keep telling him that it’s only a matter of 3-4 days. When he asked me yesterday, I said the same thing. But I know it’s not true. Without the transplant we can’t take him home….he might not even make it.” – Prakash

Abhishek is running out of time, only you can help save him

Abhishek can only survive this blood disease with a bone marrow transplant. He’s running out of time to get it. He has just 5 days left for the transplant and his father, a poor farmer, can’t save him. Abhishek asks every day when he can go back home. It’s not been easy for the parents, either. Away from their village in a city alien to them, they’ve been struggling to afford even a single meal. Abhishek can make it with a bone marrow transplant, and he needs your help.

Abhishek can only get the bone marrow transplant in 5 days is with your help.
